SPEARFISH, South Dakota — The Grizzlies continue their hot streak, winning their fifth match in a row by taking down Black Hills State University in 4 sets. The Grizzlies were able to win three sets straight after losing the first to take the match dominantly. The win puts Adams State at a record of 9-9(4-3 RMAC).
In today's match, Black Hills State came out strong and won the first set 25-21. They capitalized on the Grizzlies' mistakes, as the Grizzlies committed 11 errors in that set. Although the Grizzlies struggled in the first set, it did not deter them; they bounced back to win the next three sets in a row. In sets two through four, the Grizzlies won by scores of 25-15 in set two, 25-14 in set three, and 25-19 in the fourth and final set, clinching the match. A key factor in the Grizzlies' comeback was their ability to improve their play after their initial errors. In sets two through four, they only committed 14 errors, compared to 11 in the first set. This improvement allowed their offense to thrive, as they were able to handle Black Hills State's defense better, recording more kills and achieving a higher hit percentage in the next three sets. In set two, they registered 13 kills with a 0.379 hit percentage; in set three, 12 kills with a 0.167 hit percentage; and to close out the match, they had their highest kills total with 15 and a final hit percentage of 0.22 in the last set. After a tough first set, the Grizzlies really turned things around and dominated Black Hills State for the rest of the match.
Leading the way for the Grizzlies in their fifth straight victory were Hadleigh Richardson, Ellie Miller, Peyton Priddy, and Katie Bauer. Per usual, Richardson was able to dominate the game both offensively and defensively as she collected 17 kills, 3 blocks, and 11 digs. Overall, Richardson led the Grizzlies in kills and blocks, while also finishing second in digs. Her 17 kills also led both teams by a wide margin, with the next closest person having 8 kills in the match. Following along with Richardson was Katie Bauer, who also had a great night both offensively and defensively as she was second in the match with 8 kills while also collecting 9 digs during the match. Richardson and Bauer truly played a huge part in tonight's Grizzly win.
Outside of Richardson and Bauer, Ellie Miller and Peyton Priddy played huge roles offensively for the Grizzlies. Miller led the team with 4 serving aces while also collecting 11 assists on the night, which finished second for the Grizzlies. While Priddy also had a strong serving match with Miller as Priddy was able to collect 3 serving aces, while also leading the team with 16 assists, helping guide the strong offense the Grizzlies were able to have throughout the match.
Up next for the Grizzlies is South Dakota Mines, as they will stay in South Dakota for the night and play South Dakota Mines tomorrow night, Saturday, October 18th, at 4 PM MST. The Grizzlies will look to continue their hot streak as they will seek to win their sixth match in a row and get over the 0.500 overall record mark. South Dakota Mines is currently 5-12(3-4 RMAC), so tomorrow night's match will be a great opportunity for the Grizzlies to continue their great play and go out to get their sixth straight victory.
