DENVER, Colorado — In a Sunday afternoon game, the Grizzlies win against MSU Denver by a score of 77-67. Today was the Grizzlies' second RMAC conference game, giving them a great start to the conference schedule as they are now 2-0 in conference. Overall, the Grizzlies' record is 7-3(2-0 RMAC).
In today's game, the Grizzlies' defense stood strong, paving the way for a consistent attack by the Adams State offense. The Grizzlies' tough defense began in the first half, where they managed to hold MSU Denver to 24 points and a 25% field goal percentage. Thanks to this solid defense, the Grizzlies' offense built a 37-24 lead going into halftime. The Adams State offense scored on 15 of 33 attempts and made 5 of 15 three-pointers, securing a 13-point lead alongside their excellent defense.
In the second half, MSU Denver made some offensive adjustments, but it didn't matter as the Grizzly offense got going and never slowed down. The Grizzlies did give up 43 points but scored 40 of their own to maintain their lead throughout the game. The key factor in the second half was the Grizzlies' ability to hit their free throws to secure the win. They made 10 of 12 free throws in the half, with 8 coming in the fourth quarter. Along with those free throws, the Grizzlies made 13 of 37 field goals and 4 of 13 three-pointers in the second half.
Looking deeper into the Grizzlies' defensive numbers shows how dominant they truly were. Overall, today they held MSU Denver to 39.3% from the floor and 25% from behind the 3-point line. As well, they forced 20 turnovers, which includes 16 steals and 2 blocks. With 20 turnovers forced, the Grizzlies created a +9 turnover ratio as the Grizzly offense only committed 11 turnovers in the game.
Leading the way for the Grizzlies' defense today was Kiiyani Anitielu, Ashiian Hunter, and Elaina Watson, who secured 11 of the Grizzlies' 16 steals. Anitielu finished the night leading the Grizzlies with 5 total steals, while both Hunter and Watson finished with 3 steals, finishing tied for second on the team. Watson also had both of the Grizzlies' blocks on the night, giving her 3 steals and 2 blocks on the night, leading the way for the strong defensive performance by Adams State.
Offensively, the Grizzlies were again led by the trio of Anitielu, Hunter, and Watson, along with Taejhuan Hill, who led the Grizzlies with her 15-point night. Overall, the four women combined for 52 of the Grizzlies' 77 points, giving the Grizzlies the offense they needed to take over today's game. Individually, Anitielu scored 12 points, Hunter scored 14, and Watson finished with 11.
Up next, the Grizzlies will play another road game against New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, New Mexico, the home of the Cowboys. The game will be played next Thursday, December 11th at 5 PM MST. The Grizzlies will look to continue their great start to conference play by winning a third game in a row to open RMAC play. New Mexico Highlands is currently 4-3(1-1 RMAC) and coming off a loss against Colorado School of Mines earlier today. Adams State will look to give the Cowboys their second straight loss next Thursday.
