Albuquerque, N.M. — The Adams State Grizzlies traveled to the University of New Mexico this weekend to compete in the 2025 New Mexico Team Open, where they placed 13 individuals and three relays.
The majority of the competition featured Division I opponents, including Texas A&M, Arizona State, California, and Wyoming.
The Grizzlies' lone winner came in the women's mile, where Tristan Spence led the team to five of the top six finishes. Spence crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 45.55 seconds to claim first place and move to the top of the Division II rankings this season. Ava O'Connor finished one second behind Spence to take second place nationally. Elena Carey followed one second later to claim third place and the No. 3 national ranking.
Katie Hughes finished fifth in 4:54.72, while Fiona Hawkins took sixth in 4:56.47. Hughes also competed in the 3,000 meters, placing third in 9:48.43 to improve to No. 11 in the country. Haley Harkrider finished eighth in 10:23.38.
Lieke Hoogsteen placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.42, improving her provisional mark to No. 10 in the country.
The Adams State distance medley relay team—Maggie McCleskey, Alese Sartain, Lieke Hoogsteen, and Tristan Spence—took first place with a nation-leading time of 11:16.65.
On the men's side, freshman Harrison Boyd led the way, finishing second in the mile in 4:05.85. He fell to West Texas' Aziz Mohamed, the reigning 1,500-meter outdoor champion. Boyd's time placed him No. 8 in the country.
Awet Beraki, coming off a major win in the 3,000 meters last weekend, dropped nearly 20 seconds from his previous time to run a season-best 8:13.24 and place fourth. Julian Campos finished eighth in 8:28.68.
El-Mir Reale placed seventh in the 400-meter dash, running a personal best of 47.55. The 4x400-meter relay team also took seventh place, while the distance medley relay team finished second.
Sam Dirkes placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 16.61 meters.
