Alamosa, Colorado — In a regular season RMAC conference game, the Grizzlies take a dominating win against Westminster by a score of 98-54. The night was highlighted by a record-breaking game by
Kiiyani Anitielu. The win gives the Grizzlies their 15th win of the year, putting them at 15-10(10-6 RMAC).
Adams State was led by
Kiiyani Anitielu who had the best night of her entire career setting multiple scoring records. Anitielu finished the game with 52 points going 18-29 from the floor, 8-12 from behind the 3-point line, and 8-10 from the free-throw line. Anitielu's 52 points not only broke the old Adams State record of 38, but also broke the RMAC record of 51 that was set in 1979. The 52 points Anitielu scored are also the most points scored by any D2 Women's basketball player this season. It was truly an outstanding performance by
Kiiyani Anitielu.
Behind Anitielu's efforts Adams State truly thrived in all areas of this game as they out-rebounded Westminster 51 to 40, scored 24 more points off of turnovers, turned the ball over 9 fewer times, and shot dramatically better both from the floor and from behind the 3-point line. Adams State finished at 46.6% from the floor, and 48.4% from behind the 3-point line, whereas Westminster shot only 32.8% from the floor, and 30% from behind the 3-point line.
Although Anitielu was the star of tonight's game, the Grizzlies still have multiple other women thrive during today's game.
Ri'Ahana Davis and
Taejhuan Hill both recorded double-doubles. Davis scored 16 points while also collecting 10 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals, having a truly outstanding all-around game on both sides of the court. Hill, who also recorded a double-double, scored 11 points and collected 10 records. This is Hill's 13th double-double of the year as she continues to have an outstanding freshman season.
The Grizzlies dominated this game from the first quarter until the final buzzer. Adams State started very hot taking a commanding lead of 24-7 after the first period. This continued the rest of the game as they stretched their lead to 26 at halftime and ultimately finished winning by 44 points. This win puts the Grizzlies in a good position with playoffs coming very soon. Now sitting at 10-6 in conference the Grizzlies are currently in a three-way tie with UCCS and CSU Pueblo for fourth place in the RMAC. Adams State has a great opportunity to break this three-way tie as their next two games are against UCCS and CSU Pueblo at home at Plachy Hall. If the Grizzlies can win both games it will give them a strong hold on a top-four place in the RMAC standing, along with giving them the possibility to finish in the top three.
Looking to next week, the women play their next game at 5:30 PM MST next Thursday, February 20th. The Grizzlies will look to continue to play strong team basketball as they look to close the season before playoffs on a strong winning push.
