Adams State Baseball Falls Short in Game One Against Southwestern Oklahoma State

Weatherford, Oklahoma — In the first game of a Friday Doubleheader the Grizzlies dropped a tough game to Southwestern Oklahoma State 4-2. The loss drops the Grizzlies to 2-3 on the season. Adams State and Southwestern Oklahoma State started the second game of the doubleheader but with the game going into extra innings the game was postponed till tomorrow at 10:30 AM MST. The game will pick up in the top of the ninth inning at a score of 4-4 with the Grizzlies up to bat.

In game 1 Cesar Loma led the charge for the Grizzlies throwing 5 scoreless innings, only surrendering 1 hit, and collecting 6 strikeouts. Loma was electric holding an offense that came into this weekend very hot to only 6 baserunners. Unfortunately, the Grizzly offense could only give Loma a one-run lead which the Bulldogs were able to overcome in the sixth and seventh innings taking a 4-1 lead.

Ty Eastwood and Connor Jeffers were able to come up clutch for the Bulldogs giving them a 2 run lead in the sixth inning. Ty Eastwood hit a game-tying single which was then followed by a 2-run single by Connor Jeffers who came off the bench for the Bulldogs, collecting the biggest hit of the game.

Adams State did take the lead early in the third inning on a Christian Altamirano single up the middle. Altamirano continues to lead the Grizzly offense being a catalyst for them at the top of their order. Altamirano drove in Caleb Eiguren who had a great day at the plate finishing 2-4 with a double.

Other contributors to the Grizzly offense included Josiah Hall, who came off the bench with a clutch double down the right-field line. Hall later scored following his double on an Ayden Tauscher infield single, cutting the Bulldog lead to 2 runs in the top of the eighth inning. Unfortunately, this was the last of the Grizzly offense. The inability to get a clutch hit late in the game halted the Grizzly comeback.

Clutch hitting is where the Adams offense fell short leaving 7 runners on base. The offense is still looking to hit their stride consistently with some early season struggles. On the other hand, the Adams State pitching staff has been lights out. On top of Loma's 5, one-hit innings, CJ Pino came in to finish the game with 2 hitless innings in the seventh and eighth innings. Pino faced the minimum number of batters during his two innings of work and collected one strikeout while only throwing 19 pitches.

The Grizzlies will look to hit their stride tomorrow starting with the finish of the second game of today's doubleheader that will pick back up in the ninth inning. Following the conclusion of the suspended game, Adams State and Southwestern Oklahoma State will finish their four-game series with two more games later in the day. As stated earlier, the suspended game will begin at 10:30 AM MST, with the final two games of the series starting closely after the conclusion of this game. The final games of the series will again be held in Weatherford, Oklahoma at the Bulldogs home field.
