Adams State Men's Soccer Wins First Match of the Year Against Wayland Baptist, 5-4

ALAMOSA, Colorado — In their second home match of the year, Adams State Men's Soccer wins their first game by a score of 5-4. The first win of the season came against Wayland Baptist University and was won on a penalty kick late in the match. The win now puts the Grizzlies at a record of 1-3 and gives them something to build upon in the future.

The separator for the Grizzlies in today's match was their strong first half. The Grizzlies came out strong, taking a quick 3-0 lead before Wayland Baptist was able to score their first goal of the match, leading to a 3-1 score at halftime. In the first half, the Grizzlies scored their first 3 goals in the first 20 minutes of the match with goals by Jadon Fambro, Avery Richards, and Tobia Sereinig. On top of the lead the Grizzlies held in total goals, the Grizzlies also led in shots taken and corner kicks in the first half, which allowed their offense to get a stronghold on the match in the first half.

In the second half, Wayland Baptist was able to get rolling as they were able to make up their 2-goal deficit from the first half by scoring 3 goals in the second half. Unfortunately for Wayland Baptist, it did not matter as Avery Richards took over for the Grizzlies, scoring 2 more goals, giving him the hat trick on the day. The hat trick was Richards first of his career. As well, Richards's penalty kick goal in the 85th minute was the deciding goal that allowed the Grizzlies to take the late lead, leading to their first victory of the year. It was truly an outstanding day for Richards, who scored on all 3 of the shots he took in the match.

Along with Richards outstanding match, Fambro played a great match, scoring a goal on his one shot, along with playing all 90 minutes, leading the way for the Grizzlies' defense. Fambro has now played all 90 minutes in the past two matches, being a strong force for the Grizzlies. Other standout players were Sereinig, Tim Mietenkorte, and Hayden Rogers. Sereinig scored the other goal in the match for the Grizzlies, and Mietenkorte and Rogers assisted on two of the five Grizzly goals. Mietenkorte assisted on the first goal of the match, while Rogers assisted on the third goal of the match for the Grizzlies. Along with Mietenkorte's assist, he also anchored the Grizzly defense with Fambro playing all 90 minutes of the match.

Overall, today's match was a true team effort with a multitude of Grizzlies contributing in huge ways. With the Grizzlies now obtaining their first victory of the year, they will look to continue their offensive outburst by taking this strong win into their next match against Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The match against Oklahoma Panhandle State will again be held here in Alamosa, Colorado, and will be played on Saturday, September 21st at 3 PM MST.
