Alamosa, Colo. – In a fitting tribute to the late Joe Vigil, the Adams State cross country teams dominated the 32nd annual Joe I. Vigil Open on Saturday, sweeping both races with matching team scores of 20. Jack Gumm and Tristian Spence paced the Grizzlies with runner-up finishes in the men's and women's fields.
The men set the tone early, placing five runners in the top 13. Gumm led the charge with a second-place finish in 24 minutes, 23 seconds. He was followed by Gabe Onelio in fourth at 24:30 and David Millan in sixth at 24:40.4. Max Aldrich secured 11th in 24:53.1, and Tyman Smart sealed the scoring effort with a 13th-place finish in 24:57.2.
Danyom Yosief crossed in 18th at 25:11.3, while Micah Swann added a 20th-place finish in 25:17.7 to round out the top seven.
The women matched the men's effort with an equally dominant showing, placing five runners among the top six. Spence battled Fort Lewis' Hannah Hartwell for the individual title before finishing second in 17:18.7. Junior transfer Claragh Keane followed in third at 17:37.0, with 2024 champion Maggie McCleskey close behind in fourth at 17:54.7. Kiera Damron finished fifth in 18:16.8, and Lea Navarro capped the scoring in sixth at 18:17.3.
Clara Keddy added an eighth-place finish in 18:25.8. Haley Harkrider placed 12th in 18:30.4, and Janessa Segay claimed 18th in 19:10.5.
The sweep continues Adams State's tradition of excellence at its home meet, honoring one of the most legendary coaches in collegiate cross country.
