Alamosa, Colo. — For the first time in six years, Adams State defeated Colorado Mesa, earning a 102-98 overtime victory at home. The win improves the Grizzlies to 6-0 at home and 9-5 overall, including a 3-3 mark in RMAC play. Dillan Baker was a standout for Adams State, knocking down the go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime and finishing as the Grizzlies' second-leading scorer.
The Grizzlies started slowly, allowing the Mavericks to jump out to an 8-0 lead after Colorado Mesa opened the game with a layup off the tip. Adams State chipped away steadily, tying the game for the first time with six minutes remaining in the first half. The Grizzlies continued to build momentum and ultimately took a 48-43 lead into halftime.
After losing point guard Luke Williams in the first half, Chaz Holman stepped up with a key fast-break 3-pointer late in the half to give Adams State a 38-34 advantage. Jayce King led the Grizzlies with 21 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 6-for-9 from 3-point range. Baker added 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-13 from beyond the arc, along with four rebounds and one steal.
Adams State was strong defensively throughout the game, forcing 16 turnovers and converting them into 22 points. Although Colorado Mesa surged late in the second half to force overtime, momentum shifted in favor of the Grizzlies during the extra period. Despite multiple lead changes in overtime, Adams State consistently responded on both ends of the floor, making key defensive stops before sealing the win at the free-throw line to secure its first victory over Colorado Mesa since 2018.
The Grizzlies will head to Chadron State on Thursday to continue RMAC Play.
