ALAMOSA, Colorado — In a Wednesday night fight against Regis University, the Grizzlies dominate to take the home win by a final score of 83-59. Tonight's win comes after the Grizzlies received votes in the most recent D2 Women's Basketball Coaches Poll and puts them at a record of 16-5(10-1 RMAC). The home win also pushes the Grizzlies to a home record of 6-1 as the women continue to dominate in front of their home crowd in Alamosa.
Diving into tonight's win, the Grizzlies intense defense and consistent offense led to a decisive 24 point win. In tonight's game the Grizzlies were not only able to score 30 points in a single quarter, but were also able to hold the Regis offense to 8 points in the second quarter, and 11 points in the third quarter to create a 12 point lead going into the fourth quarter. The strong second and third quarter came after Regis was actually able to jump out to a 4 point lead after the first quarter in which they outscored the Grizzlies by a score of 22-18. The slow start defensively by the Grizzlies meant nothing as they were able to outscore the Rangers by a score of 65-37 the rest of the game, leading to the final score of 83-59.
Defensively, the Grizzlies shined, collecting 17 steals while forcing 26 Regis turnovers on the night. Leading the way defensively was Elaina Watson who led the Grizzlies with 7 steals on the night. Along with Watson was Brooklyn Long who recorded 3 steals, and Jada Price and Amaya Martinez who both recorded 2 steals on the night. Between the three women they recorded 14 of the Grizzlies 17 steals leading to a suffocating defense all night.
Offensively for the Grizzlies, they were led by 4 individuals who all scored double-digits on the night. This included Ashiian Hunter, Taejhuan Hill, Kiiyani Anitielu, and Watson. Hunter, Hill, and Anitielu all finished tied for the team lead with 14 points, while Watson finished the night with 13 points. Between the four women they combined for 55 of the Grizzlies 83 points. Outside of these 4, the Grizzlies got contributions offensively from 7 other women collecting the other 28 points on the night.
