Alamosa, Colo. – The Grizzlies kicked off three straight days of competition on Thursday. Many of the Adams State distance runners made their way out to California for the highly competitive and prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University. A separate squad of sprinters, jumpers, and throwers headed up to Western State to compete at the Western Slope RMAC Last Chance meet.
Julian Campos highlighted the day of competition by running a DII leading time of 28:40.63 in the 10000m.
Bryan Clay Invitational
Day one at Bryan Clay started off with the open sections of the 10000m.
Max Aldrich placed eighth in the Open A section of the event with a time of 29:46.30. This was good for a new personal best and provisional national qualifying time.
David Millan was next on the track for the Grizzly men. He turned in a time of 9:13.20 in the open sections of the 3000m steeplechase. In the invite sections of the steeplechase,
Housem Hrabi placed 21st, seventh in his heat. His time of 8:44.38 is a personal best and will secure his spot on the starting line at the national championship meet. He is currently ranked fourth in the nation in DII.
Julian Campos now leads the nation in the 10000m after his performance Thursday night. In Invite Heat 2, he finished second in a time of 28:40.63. He competed for the win the entire way and was rewarded with a stellar time. Also with a solid finish was
Danyom Yosief. He placed 22nd in the same heat as Campos and ran a time of 29:13.02. This time represents a provisional national qualifying mark and will see him on the bubble for making the meet.
The women's events also kicked off with the 10000m open sections in the morning.
Claragh Keane and Lea Navarro both competed in the Open A section, placing 16th and 27th. Their times of 34:57.95 and 35:18.76 represent provisional national qualifying marks. Keane's performance was also a personal best. The open sections of the 3000m steeple chase saw four Grizzlies turn in provisional national qualifying times.
Marie Garret placed 14th and won her heat in a time of 10:22.94. She currently has the fourth fastest time in DII.
Tanya Bouet achieved a time of 10:30.56. Both of their times should secure their qualification for the national meet.
Haley Harkrider and
Jazmin Estrada will be on the bubble for national qualification with their times of 10:36.76 and 10:41.35.
Western Slope RMAC Last Chance
El-Mir Reale opened up the competition in Gunnison with a commanding win in the 400m with a time of 47.83. That makes three straight meets in which he has won the event.
Gavin Heyneman had a solid showing in fourth in 49.05. The fifth, sixth, and eighth positions were claimed by Xavier Gutierrez,
Evan Tapia, and
Ryan Chacon with times of 50.95, 51.01, and 51.28. In the 100m, Anthony Henry placed fifth with a time of 11.32.
Jayden Marquez was sixth in the event in 11.65. The Grizzlies wrapped up action on the track with the 4x400m relay. The quartet of Reale, Gutierrez, Tapia, and Heyneman passed the baton around the track for four laps in 3:20.73 to placed second.
Wyatt Dirkes had a solid day in the field. He posted a new personal best in the discus of 40.35m to place fourth. He then placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 13.40m.
Landon Baker finished off the day for the Grizzly men in the long jump. His result of 6.68m was only one centimeter off his personal best. He was fifth in the competition.
The Adams State women only had two entrants at Western. And they both delivered.
Maya Kronberg threw a massive personal best in the shot put. Her mark of 12.15m is over two feet farther than her previous best, and was good for second in the competition. She then had a solid showing in the discus, throwing 40.47m for third place.
Lauren Ocampo kept the momentum going in the field with her performance in the javelin. She won the competition and set a new personal best of 43.92m.
The Grizzly distance squad will look forward to two more days of elite competiton at Bryan Clay while the rest of the team has the weekend off before competing at the RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships starting next Thursday.
