Albuquerque, N.M. — The Adams State Track & Field team had a strong showing at the New Mexico Spring Invitational, hosted by UNM, on Saturday. The Grizzlies collected a slew of personal best marks in only the second meet of the season.
The Grizzly men's 1500m contingent set the tone in the first event of the day.
Nathan Scherbarth ran a strong race for fourth place in a time of 3:51.96. This time represents a provisional national qualifying mark. Coming in just behind Nathan in fifth was
Gabe Onelio, running a time of 3:52.60, a new personal best.
Julian Campos came flying down the homestretch in the final 100m to claim seventh in a time of 3:52.84, also a PB.
Adams State's 400m runners had an impressive showing.
El-Mir Reale took home the win in a time of 47.65.
Gavin Heyneman completed the 1-2 punch, crossing the line in 49.19.
Evan Tapia was fifth in a new PB of 51.49. Those three kept it rolling in the 200m. El-Mir was second in that event, and Gavin and Evan were fifth and sixth. Their times were 21.80, 22.91, and 23.37, respectively.
Jayden Marquez was the lone Grizzly in the 100m dash, where he placed fifth in a time of 11.38.
Kien Cogley battled back after competing in the 1500m to win the 800m in a time of 2:02.70.
Wyatt Dirkes picked up two more wins for the Grizzlies in the shot put and discus. He put up a mark of 12.57m in the shot put and achieved a new personal best of 37.03m in the discus.
Competition in the 1500m also kicked off the women's side of the event.
Haley Harkrider ran an impressive race for sixth place. Her time of 4:34.81 is a new PB and counts as a provisional national qualifying mark. She was followed closely by
Keira Damron who placed in seventh in 4:35.37, resetting her PB for the second week in a row.
Clara Keddy was eighth for the Grizzlies and also achieved a PB of 4:36.75.
McKaylee Burt placed fourth in the 400m, running a time of 1:01.55. She was also sixth in the triple jump with a new personal best of 10.17m.
Maya Kronberg was sixth in the discus with a throw of 37.52m.
Lauren Ocampo highlighted the Grizzly competition in the field events with her win in the javelin with a throw of 40.11m.
Maggie McCleskey rounded out the competition on the track for Adams State with her win in the 800m. Her time of 2:11.16 represents a new personal best and a provisional national qualifying mark.
The Grizzlies head to Grand Junction this coming Thursday and Friday to compete in the High Desert Dental Maverick Invite, hosted by Colorado Mesa University.
