GOODWELL, Okla. — Adams State men's soccer battled Oklahoma Panhandle State for 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon but could not overcome an early penalty kick, falling 1-0 at Anchor D Stadium.
The loss moved the Grizzlies to 0-3 on the season, while Oklahoma Panhandle State improved to 1-2. Adams State finished the match with 10 shots, including two on goal, while the Aggies recorded 16 shots and five on frame.
Oklahoma Panhandle State struck just 1:13 into the match when Kendrick Lysius-Cherubin converted a penalty kick to give the Aggies the early 1-0 advantage. The goal ultimately stood as the lone score of the afternoon.
Adams State responded by generating several opportunities in the opening half. Kaidin Reese sent a header high in the 14th minute before Ange Avila Sandoval followed with an attempt three minutes later. The Grizzlies came within inches of an equalizer at 17:12 when Jonathan Vazquez struck the crossbar. Vazquez added another attempt in the 21st minute as Adams State continued searching for the tying goal.
On the other end, goalkeeper Bryan Amezcua kept the Grizzlies within striking distance. Amezcua stopped Miguel Castejon's attempt in the sixth minute and added another save against Preechayan Piyachatiwongs in the 30th. Adams State entered halftime trailing by just one despite Oklahoma Panhandle State's early breakthrough.
The Grizzlies continued to push after the break. Ryan Harcrow sent an attempt wide in the 50th minute before Hector Herrera produced Adams State's first shot on goal in the 61st, forcing Oklahoma Panhandle State goalkeeper Mateja Stefanovic into a save.
Adams State's defense came up with one of its biggest plays of the match in the 79th minute. After Reese put another shot on goal at the other end, Mateo Dean recorded a defensive save on Simon Echeverry's attempt to keep the deficit at one.
The Grizzlies continued looking for the equalizer into the closing minutes, with Vazquez taking the final Adams State attempt at 89:01, but the Aggies held on for the 1-0 decision.
Vazquez led Adams State with three shots, while Avila Sandoval and Reese each finished with two. Reese and Herrera accounted for the Grizzlies' two shots on goal. Amezcua played the full 90 minutes in net and finished with three saves and one goal allowed.
Adams State earned three corner kicks in the match and limited Oklahoma Panhandle State to one goal despite the Aggies producing 11 shots in the second half.
