PLAINVIEW, Texas — Idress Altaee broke a scoreless match early in the second half and Bryan Amezcua turned away all six shots he faced as Adams State men's soccer earned a 1-0 victory over Wayland Baptist Saturday afternoon at J.V. Hilliard Field.
The Grizzlies finished with a 10-7 advantage in total shots, placing three attempts on goal. Wayland Baptist put six of its seven shots on frame, but Amezcua stopped every one to complete the 90-minute shutout.
Adams State created several opportunities in the opening half but entered halftime scoreless. Ryan Harcrow recorded the Grizzlies' first attempt in the 12th minute before Mateo Dean forced a save from Wayland goalkeeper Benjamin Godard in the 43rd minute. Andy Pablo and Jonathan Vazquez also added shots late in the half.
The Grizzlies found the breakthrough shortly after halftime.
After Adams State earned a corner in the 52nd minute, Idress Altaee set up Hector Herrera for the game's only goal at 51:33. The goal was Herrera's first of the season and gave the Grizzlies the 1-0 advantage.
Wayland Baptist increased the pressure following the goal, but Amezcua held firm. He made saves in the 55th, 58th, 64th and 66th minutes as the Pioneers searched for an equalizer.
The match shifted again in the 75th minute when Wayland Baptist's Evan Schumacher received a red card, leaving the Pioneers a player down for the remainder of the contest. Adams State continued to protect the one-goal margin through the closing minutes.
Wayland Baptist generated one final chance with nine seconds remaining, but Amezcua stopped Matus Nemec's attempt at 89:51 to secure the shutout and the victory.
Herrera finished with one goal on his only shot, while Idress Altaee recorded the assist. Jonathan Vazquez had two shots with one on goal, Mateo Dean put his lone attempt on frame and Harcrow finished with two shots.
Amezcua played all 90 minutes and recorded six saves without allowing a goal. Adams State's back line also kept Wayland Baptist off the scoreboard despite the Pioneers earning 12 corner kicks, including 10 in the second half.
