SILVER CITY, New Mexico — The Adams State Volleyball team continued its early-season momentum on Tuesday evening, earning a three-set sweep over Western New Mexico University at Drag's Court. The Grizzlies claimed the match by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-19. With the victory, Adams State improved to 4-6 overall, while Western New Mexico fell to 5-4.
Tonight's opening set proved to be the closest of the night, as Western New Mexico pulled an amazing comeback before the Grizzlies finished the set winning the final two points to take the 26-24 win. The Grizzlies were able to overcome 13 errors in the first set, recording 12 kills to secure the first set victory.
The Grizzlies settled in during the second set, using 11 kills to take a 25-18 win and move ahead 2-0 in the match.
Adams State saved its strongest offensive performance for the final set. The Grizzlies totaled 16 kills while committing just three errors on 28 attempts, finishing the set with a .464 hitting percentage. Adams State closed out the match with a 25-19 victory to complete the sweep.
Sienna Markovich led the Grizzlies offensively with 10 kills and added 17 digs for an outstanding overall night. Isa Folau added nine kills, while Rowan Tribelhorn was highly efficient with six kills on 11 attempts without an error for a team-best .545 hitting percentage. Aubrey Rothermich also contributed six kills, while Katie Bauer added four kills and six digs.
Isabella DeLaRosa paced the Adams State offense with 23 assists and 13 digs. Ashlyn Jones added 10 digs, while Markovich's 17 digs led the Grizzlies defensively.
Adams State finished the match with 39 kills and six team blocks, while putting on a defensive showcase, holding Western New Mexico to a .082 hitting percentage.
The Grizzlies will look to carry the momentum from Tuesday's sweep into their next match as they prepare to open RMAC conference play against Colorado Mesa this Friday. Friday's match will take place in Grand Junction, Colorado, at the home of the Mavericks, with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m. MST. The matchup marks the beginning of conference play for the Grizzlies as they look to continue their recent success and win four of their last five matches.
