ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 9, 2014) – After two weeks on the road, the Adams State University Grizzlies return to the friendly confines of Rex Stadium to face the Chadron State College Eagles during Homecoming week.
ASU is coming off a 17-7 defeat against the No. 2 Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves. It was a closely fought contest but came at a cost as the Grizzlies went through three quarterbacks due to injury. The injuries were compacted in a matter of three plays on the last drive of the fourth quarter.
Lamar McKnight was sidelined by a hit that resulted in a CSU-Pueblo personal foul. Freshman
Tom Ross was then called into action but also saw his night cut short after a personal foul hit from CSU-Pueblo. This forced starter
Auston Hillman to return after exiting the game earlier with an injury.
Despite facing these unfavorable circumstances, the offense was led by running back
Addie Brown who scored the lone ASU touchdown off a 32-yard gain at the end of the third quarter. Brown carried the ball 12 times for 78 yards. Wide receiver
Phil Romero came through with two crucial catches for 58 yards to lead Adams State in receiving.
Defensively, ASU held CSU-Pueblo scoreless in the first half of play; marking the first time that had happened this season for the ThunderWolves. Linebacker
Wesley Brandon led all players with 12 total tackles as fellow linebacker
Connor Stevens tallied four total tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and three quarterback hits. Â
The Eagles enter Alamosa after a 40-7 trouncing of Western State Colorado University during Chadron's homecoming week. At 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play, the Eagles are tied with Colorado Mesa University for third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
CSC leads the RMAC with 190.8 rushing yards/game and also possesses a stout defense which ranks second in the conference by allowing 385.6 yards per game. At the helm it will be senior quarterback John McLain who carries a 27-13 career record as a starter. Running back Michael Madkins is no stranger to the end zone with seven touchdowns along with 478 rushing yards. McLain will look to target receiver Kyle Vinich who has a team-best 357 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
The Grizzlies are seeking their first win against the Eagles since 2005. A year ago, CSC handed ASU a 31-0 defeat at Elliott Field at Don Beebe Stadium. For the series, Chadron holds a 21-4 edge. The Eagles are under the direction of third year head coach Jay Long who holds a 20-8 career record with the program.
