Volleyball Travels To Golden For RMAC Tournament Quarterfinal Action

ASU to play Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 10, 2014) —The Adams State University Grizzlies women's volleyball team will participate tomorrow in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Tournament quarterfinal round against the Colorado School of Mines after concluding their regular season with a 14-13 overall record and 8-10 RMAC tilts.

Adams State secured the seventh seed in the tournament and will travel to Golden, Colo. to square off against the second-seeded Orediggers.

Led by head coach Jamie Skadeland- Mines finished their season with a 24-2 mark and a17-1 record in RMAC play. The Orediggers share the regular season RMAC title with the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. This marks the third straight year (2012-14) the Orediggers have captured, or shared, the RMAC regular season crown.

Their only conference loss came against CMU, therefore placing the Mavericks as the first-seed in tournament play.

Mines holds an 11-2 record in their home confines of Lockridge Arena; however both losses came against nationally ranked teams.

Offensively, the unit is led by a dynamic duo of sophomores in the form of outside hitter Alanna Winfield and middle blocker Megan Peterson.  Winfield currently leads the Orediggers in kills with 345, hitting at a .277 efficiency rate. This is her second straight season with over 300 kills. Peterson also surpassed the 300 kill mark this season, amassing 311 kills off a .358 efficiency rate. The Grizzlies will need to find a defensive answer in order to quite one of the conference's best offensive units.

The Grizzlies are led by a trio of attackers highlighted by junior outside hitter Lindsey Stindt who has a team-best 360 kills off a .208 efficiency rate. Mallory Grimsrud comes in second on the team with 245 kills, while senior Leah Nelson has 217 kills on the season. Another component to the Grizzlies chances lies in the health of freshman setter Katelyn Schwartz. Schwartz injured her right leg in the matchup against Colorado Mesa University on Nov. 7th in the 1st first set and did not return to the game. She did not play the following day in the match against Fort Lewis College.

Freshman Allie Miller filled in admirably in the absence of the starting setter and will likely be called upon if Schwartz is unable to play. Schwartz is currently the team leader in assists with 918.

This marks the first meeting between both teams as they did not face each other in the regular season. Tomorrow's match is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start at the Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colo.
