ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 22, 2014)—The Adams State University Grizzlies basketball team lost tonight in their non-conference matchup against the West Texas A&M University Buffs who are currently ranked first amongst the NCAA Division II women's basketball ranks. West Texas A&M leaves Alamosa beating Adams State by a 75-46 final score, improving their overall record to 2-1 on the season.
Meanwhile, the Grizzlies fall to 0-4 on the year and now prepare for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Dec. 5
th.
WTAMU came to town proving why they were every bit worthy of the number one overall ranking in the nation. In the first half, the Buffs took complete control of the game by rumbling to a 16 point lead in the first 10 minutes of regulation. With a hot offense rolling in the early stages of the game, the Buffs were every bit effective with their defensive play. In this first half alone, 20 out of the 41 points the Buffs scored came on behalf of ASU turnovers.
In the first half, WTAMU led by as much as 26 points thanks largely to the play of Michaela Neahuas. The Grizzlies defense was unable to silence the play of Neahaus, who scored 17 points in the first half. She also posted three assisted and proved to be instrumental part of the Buff defense by leading the team with three steals. Neahaus, a Colorado native and Highlands Ranch High School graduate, was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year the year in 2012.
ASU's
Emilie Klint had an effective first half of play, scoring eight points off 4-6 shooting from the field. WTAMU entered halftime leading the Grizzlies 41-16.
In the first half the Grizzlies shot 8-27 from the field, tallying up to a 29.6 percent efficiency rate. ASU was 0-6 from beyond the 3-point line while also shooting 0-1 from the charity stripe. In comparison, WTAMU shot 13-28 (46.4%) while shooting 4-11 (36.4%) from beyond the arc. From the free throw line, the Buffs were 11-18 shooting at a 61.1 percent rate.
The second half proved to be a much different narrative for the Grizzlies. The Adams State offensive unit shook off the rust, and was narrowly outscored in the stanza by a 34-30 point margin. From the field, the Grizzlies shot 10-27 (37%) while shooting 3-8 (37.5 %) from the 3-point line. The Grizzlies were able to penetrate the Buffs 2-3 zone which translated to ASU shots in the paint and foul troulbe for the Buffs. The Grizzlies shot 7-10 from the free throw line in the second half. However the second half efforts were not enough and the Buffs ran away with tonight's victory 75-46. Offensively ASU was led by the play of Klint who scored 12 point of 6-11 shooting.
Mariah Gonzales scored 10 points for the Grizzlies, while fellow classmate
Desiree Anderson scored 9 points in the contest. Senior
Brittney Whiteman scored the final six points of the game by netting back-to-back 3-point shots in the closing minutes of play.
ASU now prepares for Colorado State University- Pueblo for a Dec. 5
th showdown. The Grizzlies will be traveling to Pueblo, Colo. in what will be the first RMAC contest of the season for both squads.
