WBB | Grizzlies fall to UCCS, 81-53

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (December 6, 2014)—The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team lost this evening against fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) participant the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions by an 83-51 score. After tonight's loss, Adams State has now dropped two consecutive RMAC games, making their record stand at 0-6, 0-2 in RMAC play. UCCS improves their overall record to 7-1, 2-0 in RMAC contests with tonight's result.

The Mountain Lions benefited from the home court advantage, starting the game on a 16-0 run in the first five minutes of the contest. A strong offensive output from the trio of Gabby Ramirez, Brit Hernandez, and Sam Patterson had the Lions offense rolling. This trio scored 20 of the 38 points UCCS scored in the first half. The Mountain Lion defense created problems for the Grizzly offensive unit, equating to ASU being limited to shoot only 20% from the field in the first half. Mariah Gonzales finally got the Grizzlies on the scoreboard with 13 minutes left in the first half off a jump shot. For the half, Gonzales led the ASU offense with 10 points off 3-10 shooting from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe.

UCCS entered the second half leading the Grizzlies 38-21. The same narrative of the first half for the Grizzlies was found in the second. The UCCS offensive unit racked up another 43 points after the break. The Grizzlies offensive unit found its grove in the second half, scoring 32 points off 28.6 shooting percentage from the field. For the game, UCCS outshot ASU from a percentage stand point of 48.1% to 24.6%.  Ultimately the deep bench of the Mountain Lions proved to be pivotal, as it contributed 33 points for tonight's game. In contrast the Grizzly bench contributed 13 points. Offensive leaders for ASU were Gonzales and Desiree Anderson. Gonzales scored 18 points off 5-18 shooting while shooting 8-10 from the free throw line. Anderson contributed 12 points.

Adams State now prepares for Fort Lewis College, as they will play the Skyhawks in Durango, Colo. scheduled for a 1 p.m. tipoff on Dec. 13.
