Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

WBB | Adams State Shuts Down Cowgirls For 57-48 Win

ALAMOSA, Colo. (January 10, 2015) —The Adams State University Grizzlies women's basketball team won tonight in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) bout with the visiting New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls by a 57-48 score. With the win, ASU snaps a four game losing streak and improves their record to 2-11 on the season and 2-7 in RMAC showdowns. NMHU on the other hand falls to 4-9 on season and 3-6 in RMAC play. The Cowgirls have yet to find a road victory so far this season. The Grizzlies will now prepare for a road battle with RMAC foe Metropolitan State University of Denver (Jan. 16).

The Grizzlies, riding on the offensive success they put together last night against Western New Mexico, strung together perhaps their most complete game of the season in tonight's match-up against the Cowgirls. Emilie Klint, who has been in prime performance as of late, led the Grizzlies offensively with 14 points off 6-of-11 shooting from the field while going 2-of-4 from the charity stripe. Klint also posted seven rebounds while five of those rebounds were defensive. J'nae Squires-Horton and Maya Brown contributed down the stretch for the Grizzlies, scoring 10 and seven points, respectively. With the offense rolling, the Grizzlies went into half time ahead, 30-26. It marked the first game this season in which the Grizzlies led at the break.

Unlike last night, the Grizzlies built upon the momentum they established in the first half and sealed the second half with a strong offensive output paralleled with a stifling defensive effort. In the second half, the Grizzlies tallied 15 of their 27 points from turnovers and utilized their bench to be the offensive focal point instead of the play of the duo of Desiree Anderson and Mariah Gonzales. In tonight's match-up, Anderson and Gonzales combined for only for 13 points. In last night's game against WNMU, Gonzales and Anderson combined for 40. The Grizzlies responded to the defensive focus the Cowgirls placed on the aforementioned duo and used it to their advantage. The Grizzlies concluded the game winning, 57-48.

For the game, the Grizzlies shot from the field 20-of-56 (35.7 %) in comparison to the Cowgirls 15-of-51 (29.4%). ASU led by as many as 13 points in the second half. The Grizzlies will now prepare for road match-ups against Metro State University of Denver (Jan 16.) and Regis University (Jan 17.).
