The Grizzlies, after having success on the offensive side of the ball in their previous two games, were unable to recapture their mojo on the road against MSU Denver. While the team did keep the score relatively close in the first half, the Roadrunners went on a 10-0 run towards the end of the second half to shift momentum on the side of MSU Denver. The Grizzlies responded with a set of layups from
Mariah Gonzales to close out the first half of regulation, trailing the Roadrunners 30-20. In the first half, the Grizzlies were unable to find an answer to the play of sophomore guard Janae Paine, who scored 11 points in the first half. Gonzales was the offensive leader for the Grizzlies, leading the team with four points off her baskets in the closing minutes of the first half.
MSU Denver scored 10 points of Grizzly turnovers in the first half while the bench supplemented 10 points as well to the score board.
The second half of the game was as equally frustrating for the Grizzlies as the first. The Roadrunners began to take control of the game as Deni Jacobs and Emily Hartegan made their presence known. The combination of Jacobs and Hartegan combined for 13 of the 32 points the Roadrunners had in the second half. With the offensive focus oriented on their thee main starters, head coach Tonya Haave was able to quietly highlight her deep bench by having her bench contribute 21 points in the second half alone. While her bench highlighted the offensive threat the Roadrunners can be, the Grizzlies did score 13 points off turnovers in the second half. MSU Denver closed out the game, winning 62-47. For the game the Grizzlies shot from the field at 24.3% (17-70) compared to the Roadrunner 41.8% (23-55).
Mariah Gonzales led the Grizzlies offensively with 11 points scored in the first half off of 4-13 shooting and 1-3 from beyond the 3 point line. Gonzales was 2-2 from the free throw line.
Emilie Klint and
Desiree Anderson chipped in seven points each. The Grizzlies will now prepare for a road matchup between the Regis University Rangers, tomorrow Jan. 17 at 3:00 p.m.
