Adams State Program Information

ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 28, 2015) – Adams State University looks to extend their winning streak to three games on Saturday as they host conference foe Western New Mexico University. With back-to-back wins the Grizzlies face a Mustangs squad that currently possesses a five-game losing streak. Saturday's game also marks the final conference game between the two programs as WNMU will join the Lone Star Conference for the 2016-17 athletic season.

Last Time Out For ASU
A 14 play, 80 yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter propelled Adams State University to a 17-13 win over New Mexico Highlands University on Oct. 24th. It marked the first road win in 2015 for the Grizzlies who trailed 13-10 at halftime before completing their comeback against the Cowboys.

The comeback was made possible by the ASU defense as Wesley Brandon forced a fumble that teammate Ryan Holland quickly grabbed.

The game-winning drive kept progressing down the field thanks to a pair of NMHU penalties and two crucial fourth down conversions by ASU. The Grizzlies quickly entered the red zone thanks to a double reverse play call with Addie Brown on the receiving end of a 30-yard throw. The trick play pushed ASU to the 8 yard line. With momentum clearly on their side the Grizzlies reached paydirt with a 6-yard touchdown strike from Johnny Feauto to Romero with 42 seconds remaining.

About The Mustangs
WNMU's five-game skid dates back to Sept. 26 when the Mustangs fell to Colorado State University-Pueblo, 42-27. Since that defeat WNMU has faced formidable RMAC opponents in Fort Lewis College, Colorado School of Mines, and Colorado Mesa University.

The team is paced by senior quarterback Mitch Glassmann who leads the conference in passing yards (3,039), passing yards per game (379.9), and total offensive yards per game (374.4). Wide receiver Xavier Ayers ranks first amongst RMAC players in receiving yards (1,087) and receiving yards per game (135.9).  Running back Marques Rodgers also poses a threat and enters Saturday's tilt with 918 yards rushing and 7 touchdowns.

The Mustangs are under the direction of head coach Adam Clark who is in his sixth year at the helm.

Last We Met
The Mustangs defeated ASU in 2014 thanks to a last minute, go-ahead touchdown. The Shaine Tupua one-yard scoring run was enough to give the Mustangs a 40-36 win from Silver City, N.M. The Grizzlies possessed a 29-16 lead entering the fourth but the ASU defense was unable to find an answer to the WNMU offense that racked up 24 points in the final stanza.

It was a game the Grizzlies controlled until the fourth quarter. ASU galloped out to a 16-7 advantage after the first quarter and expanded upon that to take a 22-10 lead into halftime. For the game, the Mustangs totaled 618 yards of offense and were led by quarterback Mitch Glasmann and running back Marques Rodgers. Glasmann went 23-of-45 for 347 yards and two touchdowns while Rodgers had his way with the ASU defense to the tune of 222 rushing yards on 32 carries along with one touchdown.

New Year, New Gear
Unveiled for 2015 is a white matte finish helmet as well as a traditional green helmet that has been used in recent seasons. The biggest change comes in the form of the official Adams State U-Paw decal that is prominently displayed on both. Under the Schutt brand, both styles incorporate a green facemask with "Grizz" written on the nose bumper. Adams State last wore white helmets during the 1970's before switching to green.

Both helmets not only incorporate a new style but an upgrade in student-athlete safety by switching to the Schutt Vengeance VTD II and Schutt AiR XP Pro VTD helmet models. Both models have been evaluated and given the highest rating possible (5-Stars) according to Virginia Tech helmet ratings.
