Last Time OutThe Grizzlies had the tough task of facing (RV) Angelo State University and No. 2 Tarleton State University over the weekend at the Texan Tip-Off Classic in Stephenville, Texas. ASU dropped both contests but also showed promise along the way. Adams State led Angelo State at the half but lost the lead after halftime, resulting in a 75-71 defeat.
Against second-ranked Tarleton, Adams State also went into halftime with a lead. In the opening stanza the Grizzlies led by as much as 13 but the Texans closed the gap and eventually took their first lead of the game early in the second half. Helping Tarleton's cause were free throws as the team shot 26-of-33 from the line (78.8%). In comparison the Grizzlies went 7-of-14 (50%) from the charity stripe.
Shakir Smith paced ASU in defeat with a career-high 35 points. For his weekend performance, Smith was named to the Texan Tip-Off Classic All-Tournament team.
From Downtown!The Grizzlies shot 14-of-27 (51.9 %) from three-point territory in the loss to Tarleton State. Individually, Smith shot an impressive 7-of-11 from downtown against the Texans. Against Angelo State, the Grizzlies went 11-of-28 (39.3%) from three. Through two regular season games, Adams State ranks first amongst RMAC teams with a 45 percent conversion rate from three-point range.
Catching a BreakThe Grizzlies notched 36 combined fast break points over the weekend. Angelo State and Tarleton combined to produce only 20 fast break points in comparison.
At The Conference LevelAfter two regular season tilts, Smith ranks third in the RMAC with 26.5 points per game. The senior also ranks second in three-pointers made with 9.
Joe Bell Austin is tied for fourth in assists by dishing out 4.5 per game.
DJ Morgan is tied for first with 6 blocks.
About The Aggies and CougarsUtah State competes in the Mountain West Conference (MWC). Last year USU went 11-7 in conference play. During the 2015-16 season, the Aggies have gone 1-1 in exhibition play while most recently earning a 73-70 regular season win at Weber State. Utah State holds a 49-9 record in home openers dating back to the 1957-58 season. The Aggies are 33-5 all-time against Division II opponents.
BYU resides in the West Coast Conference (WCC) rubbing elbows with the likes of tenth-ranked Gonzaga. The program went 2-0 in exhibition play and opened the regular season with a 85-54 thrashing of Utah Valley University. The Cougars went 13-5 in conference play last year losing the West Coast Conference Championship to Gonzaga, 91-75.
About the MustangsThe Grizzlies will play their third Lone Star Conference program when they host No. 22 Midwestern State University on Saturday. The Mustangs went 10-4 in conference play last year and fell in the LSC tournament to Cameron. Midwestern did advance into the NCAA Division II National Tournament but lost to Angelo State, 66-49. The program is under the direction of head coach Nelson Haggerty who is in his fifth season at the helm.
