MBB | Fort Lewis Preview

ALAMOSA, Colo. (December 4, 2015) – Adams State University begins a very important part of their schedule this weekend.

On Saturday the Grizzlies face Fort Lewis College for their first conference game of the year. Live coverage can be found at the links above or by visiting the ASU men's basketball schedule page.

Last Time Out
Last weekend, Adams State travelled north to compete in the Milanovich Classic in Dickinson, N.D. They faced two NAIA opponents in the Carroll College Fighting Saints and the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears. ASU started the weekend on a high note getting their first win of the season against Carroll. They posted a very impressive 70 percent clip from beyond the arc in the first half which floated their game average to 63.2 percent and the team to an 89-74 win.

The weekend had a sour finish however. ASU left the Classic with a loss in the final seconds to the Battlin' Bears. ASU was 19 seconds away from a perfect record in the Milanovich Classic. Adams State sent Rocky Mountain's Taylor Longo to the line where he drained both attempts with 19 seconds to go; bringing things even to force overtime. Longo wasn't done however and five minutes later returned to sink a buzzer beater that would seal a 92-90 overtime win for Rocky Mountain.

About Fort Lewis College
Last year the Skyhawks went to the RMAC Tournament where they fell to CSU-Pueblo. This year FLC has been white hot and boasts an impressive 5-0 record. While some of these wins have come against NAIA programs like Northern New Mexico College; FLC is 1-1 in their exhibition matches against NCAA Division I opponents. They currently carry a five game winning streak and sit atop of the Mountain Division of the RMAC with a +16.2 point scoring margin over their opponents (#1 in the RMAC).

When Last We Met
Shakir Smith led the Grizzlies with 22 points during a win over FLC on 1/31/15. With one second left in the first half Smith tossed a prayer from half court that found the net and recaptured the lead for Adams State going into the locker room. Adams State then took the lead and ran, going up as much as 13 points at one point in the second half. Fort Lewis brought things within nine for a 77-69 final.

Bearing Down
The Grizzlies have been deadly accurate from three-point land. With some fancy shooting from long range Adams has put up some rather gaudy numbers. ASU holds the No. 1 spot in the conference, and No. 3 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage at 46 percent. ASU also boasts 11.6 three-pointers per game, that places them at No. 6 at the national level. Adams State also has the arc well defended. ASU ranks first in the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense, keeping opponents to a meager 30 percent from downtown.
