ALAMOSA, Colo. (November 17, 2016) – The tournament portion of the 2016-17 regular season concludes this weekend at the Fort Lewis Classic for Adams State University.
The Grizzlies are slated to face Northern New Mexico College on Nov. 18
th followed by a Nov. 19
th meeting with Embry-Riddle University (Ariz.). The Grizzlies are searching for their first win of the season as the team currently sits at 0-3. All game day links for the Fort Lewis Classic can be found above.

Last Time Out
A 50.9 percent shooting clip from the field and a 54.2 percent shooting mark from three-point range wasn't enough for Adams State as they fell, 103-88, against No. 20 Midwestern State University on Nov. 14.
A string of five consecutive three-pointers in the opening minutes rocketed the Grizzlies to a 15-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. The charge was led by
Brandon Sly as the guard was responsible for three of the five trifectas.The ASU lead soon began to shrink thanks to turnovers that inched the Mustangs back into the game. The Mustangs went on to tie the game at 15-15 just a few minutes after the large Grizzly lead. Adams State would take a 19-15 lead after an
Ethan Caton layup but the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run and never looked back.
Bryan Umoru led ASU with a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sly added 20 points, 5 assists, and a season-high 4 three-pointers.
Jarrett Givens and
Shane Johnson added 15 and 11 points, respectively.
Scouting Northern New Mexico
The Eagles own a 2-4 record entering tournament play. Northern New Mexico receives a bulk of their offensive output from junior guard Jeffrey Long and his 21.0 points per game. Nicho Burgard, a junior forward, chips in 9.5 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per contest. Junior forward Ezini Ugbisien adds a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game along with 9.0 points per game. The Eagles post 81.7 points per game but give up 96.8 points per game. The program has given up 100 or more points this season in games against Wayland Baptist University (twice) and University of the Southwest. Last season the Eagles lost to Adams State, 91-80, in an exhibition game in Espanola on 11/4/15. Ryan Cordova serves as head coach of the Eagles in his seventh season.
Scouting Embry-Riddle
The Eagles are led by freshman guards Nick Johnson and Gilbert Ibarra who both average 11.1 points per game. Johnson holds a team-best 13 steals and 16 three-pointers through 7 games. Ibarra is also a threat from downtown with 14 three-pointers on the season. The Eagles average 77.8 points per game but give up an average of 90.4 points per game. Embry-Riddle enters the tournament with a 2-5 overall record. The Eagles are under the direction of head coach Eric Fundalewicz who enters his second season at the helm. The program is a member of the NAIA and competes as a member of the California Pacific Conference.
Season Outlook
The Grizzlies were picked 12
th in the RMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll on Oct. 11
th. Adams State received 57 total points in the poll as Colorado Mines was tabbed to finish first with 186 points and 5 first-place votes. Joshua Blaylock of Fort Lewis College was named the Preseason Player of the Year. Gokul Natesan of Colorado Mines was picked Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Looking Ahead
The Grizzlies return to Alamosa to face Northern New Mexico in their home opener on Nov. 22
nd at 7:30pm. It will serve as the final non-conference game of the season for the Grizzlies.
