LARAMIE, Wyo. (November 22nd, 2016) --- The Adams State University women's basketball team was defeated in an exhibition game tonight in Laramie, Wyoming 79-40. Since it was an exhibition game for Adams State, the loss will not count against the team's season record.
The Grizzlies defense made the first strike, forcing a turnover on the game's first possession. They would then give up 2 turnovers themselves leading to 5 Cowgirls points. The rest of the first period was very similar with 5 turnovers by the Grizzlies and a 7-20 deficit to end the 1
st.
The Grizzly defense played tough in the 2
nd period, allowing
Lauren McDonald to drain a 3 pointer to cut the Wyoming lead to 23-10. A few minutes later,
Cydney McHenry would hit a 3 of her own to cut the lead down to 25-15. After a media timeout, momentum faded due to a string of Adams turnovers. The team would have 11 total by the half leading to 17 Wyoming points. The halftime score was 39-19 in favor of the home team. The Grizzlies shot 33.3% in the half, while the Cowgirls shot 44.4%.
Adams State got off to a slow start offensively in the 3
rd. The team would not score until a
Lejla Hadzialijagic sunk a jumper midway through the period. That would be 1 of only 2 baskets for the Grizzlies in the 3
rd as the Cowgirls outscored them 16-5 to take a commanding lead to the 4
th.
The 4
th began with a rare 3 pointer from
Nicole Broyles-Mortensen. Wyoming continued to force turnovers and keep Adams in foul trouble to increase their lead. Eventually, Wyoming coach Joe Legerski put in his bench players and took his foot off the gas. The Grizzlies had some success at that point, scoring 16 in the 4
th. Still, the Cowgirls cruised to the 39 point win.
Brianna Reyna led the Grizzlies with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block.
Nicole Broyles-Mortensen also posted 9 points and 4 rebounds. The Cowgirl's Liv Roberts had 12 points and 3 steals. Wyoming shot 6-21 from 3 in the win. They also shot 43.6% from the field. Adams State would end the game with 21 turnovers and were outrebounded 45-25.
The Grizzlies face Colorado State in another exhibition game tomorrow at 2:30pm in Fort Collins.
