FORT COLLINS, Colo. (November 24th, 2016) --- The Adams State University women's basketball team played their 2
nd game in less than 24 hours yesterday afternoon in an exhibition game at Colorado State. The Rams won the contest 76-29. Just like the Wyoming game, the loss will not count against the Grizzlies' record due to the game's exhibition status.
Â
A stunned crowd in Fort Collins looked on as a Division II school took the lead on the defending Mountain West Champions 3 years running. Already up 2-0,
Arianna Barnes put in another basket to increase the lead to 4-0. CSU would finally get on the board with 4 straight points from Elin Gustavsson to tie things up. Adams would not be phased as
Cydney McHenry nailed a 3 to put the Grizzlies back up 7-4. McHenry would then add a layup to make it 9-4. Colorado State ended the 1
st on a 4-0 run, but trailed at the end of 1 by a score of 9-8.
Â
With the Ram's 17 home game winning streak in danger, the team picked it up in a big way in the 2
nd. CSU entered the 2
nd on a slim 4-0 run but kept momentum on their way to an unbelievable 27-0 run. The misery for Adams would finally end with a shot from
Brianna Reyna with only a minute left in the half. Overall, the Rams outscored the Grizzlies 30-4 in the 2
nd on their way to a 38-13 halftime lead. CSU had 26 points off of 15 turnovers by the break. The Rams also opened it up from 3 point range in the 2
nd quarter going 5-11 from beyond the arc.
Â
Things did not get much better for the Grizzlies in the 3
rd. The Rams continued to light it up from 3, create points off turnovers, and score from the paint. They would end the quarter by outscoring ASU 20-8.
Â
The Rams eased up a bit in the 4
th, playing a few more bench players. However, the Rams did put in their 6'5 freshman from Latvia, Anna Dreimane who is likely a superstar in waiting. Dremane would block 6 shots in the 4
th quarter alone, most of which she did not have to jump to do. She also added 2 easy layups and 5 rebounds. The Grizzlies found some success in the final 10 minutes as well.
Nicole Broyles-Mortensen hit a layup and got the foul midway through the quarter. The game would end a short time later by a 76-29 score in favor of the Rams.
Â
In total, CSU scored 37 points off of 28 ASU turnovers. The rebounding battle was very close with the Rams holding a 37-36 edge. Colorado State was not shy from 3 point land and shot 10-30 for the afternoon. Elin Gustavsson had 12 points and 4 rebounds for the Rams. Ellen Nystrom and Jordyn Edwards had 5 steals each for CSU.
Brianna Reyna had 4 points, 8 rebounds, and a block for the Grizzlies.
Â
Coach
Larry Joe Hunt had this to say about the game: "Today I felt we played hard on such a quick turnaround between games. Our rebound effort was better but we have to get better at ball security."
Â
Next up, the Grizzlies head back home to take on New Mexico Highlands and CSU-Pueblo. The games are set for December 2nd at 5:30pm and December 3rd at 5:30pm.  Â
