MBB | CSU-Pueblo & Western State Preview

ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 10, 2016) – Adams State University ended last weekend with a road sweep over their opponents. This weekend the Grizzlies will bring that streak home and test it against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Friday and Western State Colorado University on Saturday.  Both games will see a 7:30 p.m tip off.

Last Time Out
With last weekend's results, Adams State (11-11, 10-7 RMAC) has reached .500 on their overall record. Last weekend the Grizzlies went on the road to first clash with Black Hills State University. The men came out hot in the first half going on scoring runs and taking a 14-point lead into the locker room. In the second half the Grizzlies picked up right where they left off leading the Yellow Jackets all the way to the 74-58 final. Shakir Smith led Adams State in scoring, registering 25 points going 8-of-11 from the field and 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. He was followed in point totals by DJ Morgan and EJ Hubbard who combined for 31 points. Morgan, Vitor Machado and Kendyl Grover each snagged 6 rebounds to tie for the team lead on the night.

The Grizzlies took the win and momentum to Rapid City to face South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Saturday. The Grizzlies enforced their will from the start and took as much as an 11-point lead in the first half. South Dakota SM&T wasn't done, however, and went on a frenzy using a 30-10 run to bring things within a point going into the half 34-33. The second half was hotly contested as well with the Hardrockers taking their first lead of the game with 16 minutes left to play. Losing the lead was enough of a wakeup call for Adams State, the Grizzlies would then post 15 unanswered points to reclaim the lead en route to a 77-59 victory.

About Colorado State University-Pueblo (14-9, 10-7 RMAC)
The ThunderWolves are currently tied with Adams State at 10-7 in conference play. However CSU-Pueblo holds the number seven spot with a head-to-head tie-breaker. Things have been a mixed bag for the ThunderWolves who have won two of their last five. They have knocked off quality opponents in MSU Denver and UCCS but have also been victimized by Colorado Christian University and Westminster College. CCU and WC sport unimpressive 9-8 records but between them have 11 straight wins. Regardless, CSU-Pueblo leads the conference in points per game with 84.5. Their leading scorer, Chris Golden, contributes 16.5 points per game. The ThunderWolves are also persistent from three-point land. They bury 37 percent of 3-pointers for a conference best 11 per game. Friday's game may help decide seeding going towards the RMAC Shootout.

About Western State Colorado University (4-19, 3-14 RMAC)
Hitting a rough patch in their schedule, the Mountaineers have recently faced Colorado Mesa, Metro State and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. The results have been less than positive as WSCU finds themselves on the business end of a six-game skid. The Mountaineers typically go 42 percent from the field as a team and are middle of the pack in scoring with 75 points per game. They are led offensively by Danny Hopkins who averages 13.6 points per game, followed by Ben Beauchamp with 12.8. Beauchamp also leads the Mountaineers in 3-point shooting, sinking 67 and hitting 39.6 percent of his shots.
