ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 24, 2016) – Adams State University will close out their regular season on the road by facing Fort Lewis College on Friday night at 7:30 pm. Despite already securing a RMAC Tournament berth, some seeding remains up in the air until the conclusion of Friday night's conference games.
Last Time OutThe Grizzlies went to New Mexico with a bit of a chip on their shoulder after finding themselves on the wrong end of a buzzer-beater against Western State Colorado University on February 13
th in their home finale. Adams State started the weekend against the one-win Mustangs of Western New Mexico University.
Shakir Smith and
Kendyl Grover combined for 30 points to lead the Grizzlies. Grover registered another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Grizzlies trailed much of the first half and posted a 44 percent shooting clip from the field going into the locker room. Adams State got midway through the second half before taking control to keep the Mustangs at one win with an 84-66 victory.
Adams State continued their New Mexico road trip with a game in Las Vegas, New Mexico against the Cowboys of New Mexico Highlands University. Rough shooting from the field (34.4 %) was made up for with three pointers, (21 points off 3-pointers) and near perfection from the free throw line (5-6). The second half saw five lead changes and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by
DJ Morgan to bring things all even at 81 apiece to force overtime. The overtime period was no stranger to heroics either, seeing three lead changes and a three-point game tying effort from Smith that was not to be. As the overtime buzzer sounded the Grizzlies suffered a 95-92 defeat.
About Fort Lewis College (23-3, 18-3 RMAC)Fort Lewis College owns the number one spot in the RMAC and have been crowned the RMAC regular season champions. Their play has earned them national recognition as Fort Lewis is ranked No. 8 in the latest NCAA DII poll. The Skyhawks are also the second highest scoring offense in the conference and allow the third fewest points of any defense in the conference. Skyhawk Joshua Blaylock sinks 47 percent from beyond the arc to pace FLC offensively. Friday's game will be a clash of strengths with the best three-point shooting team in the conference (FLC) facing the best three point defense in the conference (ASU).

Adams State started their conference schedule by hosting FLC in Plachy Hall back in December. The Grizzlies took it to the then 5-1 Skyhawks whose only loss coming into the contest was against the University of Colorado, 95-71. Adams State was led by
Shakir Smith who posted 17 points on the night, he was followed by
Joe Bell Austin and
DJ Morgan who each had 10 points. The Grizzlies stifled Fort Lewis, forcing a 28.6 percent shooting mark from the field in the first half. The Grizzlies also kept Blalock in check who was 4-of-12 from the field and just 1-of-5 from three-point land.
