PORTALES, N.M. (February 27, 2016) – Adams State University fell on the wrong end of a Saturday doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico University. The Grizzlies opened with a narrow 10-9 defeat in game one followed by a 14-3 setback in game two.
The Grizzlies (3-9) were poised to take the opener of the twinbill but strong production in the middle innings from the Greyhounds ultimately led to the 10-9 loss. Adams State held a 7-1 lead heading to the bottom of the third but ENMU tallied four consecutive innings of run production to pull ahead.
The Greyhounds (6-6) collected a run in the third and a two-run fourth inning which was followed by a three-run fifth inning and an additional two runs in the sixth. ENMU collected their final run of the game during the seventh. Meanwhile after ASU picked up four runs in the third they were kept off the scoreboard until the eighth when they brought in a pair of runners across home plate.
Derek Denovellis led the ASU bats with a 3-for-5 outing including two RBI, two runs scored, and a solo home run in the second.
Michael Downs added a 4-for-4 performance with two RBI and a run scored. The duo of
Evan Weidner and
Zach Moldenhauer each finished with two hits apiece as
Tyler Thurston went yard for his first home run of the season during the eighth. Despite ASU's active bats, the team stranded 11 runners on base.
Kyle Godfrey received the starting nod for ASU and lasted 4.0 innings but allowed six runs off eighth hits. Godfrey struck out five but gave up three walks while beaning two ENMU batters.
Ryan Ferguson came on in relief and ultimately picked up the loss in 1.0 innings of work.
The Grizzly pitching staff continued to struggle in game two as the Greyhounds tallied 14 runs off 14 hits. The floodgates were opened by ENMU with a five-run second followed by an eight-run third to push out to a 13-2 lead. The Grizzlies were unable to formulate a comeback and managed to add only one additional run in the seventh.
Starter
Bailey Garcia's outing was halted after 2.2 innings on the mound. Garcia allowed 13 runs off nine hits while giving up a six walks.
Ty Gavin and
Dillon Gaasbeck combined to finish the game for ASU and pitched serviceably but the damage had already been done by ENMU.
Nico Porreco was the lone Grizzly with a multi-hit performance; going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Thomaslee Mares,
Drew Wells, and Denovellis chipped in one RBI apiece in a losing effort.
The three-game series wraps up tomorrow at 12pm from Portales.
