ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 11, 2016) – With one out in the bottom of the eighth
Chris Morley lifted a solo shot over the left field fence to give Adams State University a 5-4 lead. The opposite field shot was the start of a three-run inning to ensure a 7-4 Grizzly win over Regis University on Friday afternoon.
The Grizzlies (8-10, 4-1 RMAC) came alive late in the series opener with a three-run eighth along with a two-run seventh. Adams State now enters Saturday's doubleheader on a three-game winning streak and the victors of five of their last six games.
In Friday's see-saw battle, Adams State took a 1-0 lead with a RBI triple from
Dillon Granzella in the third. Regis tacked on a run in the top of the sixth only to see Adams State rebuttal with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.
It looked shaky in the seventh for ASU fans as reliever
Benjamin Nutsch ran into trouble as the Rangers connected for back-to-back RBI doubles. The two quick runs put the Rangers on top, 3-2, but a hot Grizzly offense jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the frame. ASU took the 4-3 lead thanks to the bat of
Evan Weidner and his two RBI double to right center.
Three insurance runs were tacked on in the eighth with Morley's home run, a bases loaded RBI walk to
Deven Nelson, and a RBI single by
Dillon Bollig.
As they did last weekend, the Grizzlies thrived against opponent relief pitchers by tacking on five runs once Regis starter Brad Thoutt was pulled with one out in the bottom of the seventh. As a result, the Grizzlies tallied a single-game best 18 hits and a .450 team batting average. ASU also collected five extra-base hits with Granzella and Bollig each finishing with four hits apiece.
Dylan Sherry (1-1) picked up the win as
Bailey Garcia came on to close the game and pick up his second save of the season.
The Grizzlies host the Rangers tomorrow in doubleheader action beginning at 12pm from the ASU Baseball Field.
