ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 12, 2016) -- In Saturday's doubleheader conference matchup against Regis University, Head Coach
Jim Capra and his Adams State University baseball team walked away with two victories. In both wins against the Rangers, the Grizzlies took advantage of poor pitching on behalf of Regis to extend their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) winning streak to five consecutive games.
The Grizzlies cruised to victory in both matchups, earning the victory in game one, 11-6, and another in game two by a 15-4 score.
The first two runs put up on the scoreboard in game one were both collected off home runs. Regis collected one run in the first inning to capture the lead during the opener. It was made possible with a solo shot from Ranger catcher Tyler Overboe, who crushed the ball deep into left center to collect the first run of the game. Adams State tied the ballgame via a solo homerun into right from senior outfielder
Dillon Bollig. His homer against the Rangers marked his second of the season. For the game Boling went 2-of-3, earned a triple, had three runs, and one RBI.
The bottom of the third inning is when things began to spiral out of control for the Rangers. The Grizzlies brought in nine runs off four hits for the frame to take a commanding 10-1 lead early in the game.
The Rangers were able to add three runs in the top of the fourth but the Grizzly lead proved to be too much to overcome.
After suffering his first loss of the season last week against New Mexico Highlands University,
Tanner Wiemers (3-1) bounced back and earned his third victory of the season on Saturday. In 3.2 innings, Wiemers was solid and only allowed four hits and 4 earned runs. Three of those runs were allowed in the fourth inning. Pitchers
Ryan Ferguson and
Mason Munford also saw action in relief and held the lead for ASU.
Regis starter Chris Quackenbush (2-2) picked up his second loss of the season. Quackenbush pitched two innings, gave up five hits and four earned runs, while walking four batters
In the second game pitching continued to plague the visiting Rangers. Regis' Noah Gotsis took the loss after giving up ten runs on seven hits.
The Grizzlies earned the victory with a monumental second inning. The Grizzlies put up 10 runs for the frame to build an insurmountable early lead on Regis.
The trio of
Chris Morley,
Evan Weidner, and
Dylan April had successful outings to pave the way to victory. For the game, Morley went 3-for-5, collected 2 RBIs, and had one home run. Weidner went 2-for-4, collected 2 RBIs, and had one home run as well. April finished his day 2-for-3 and brought in a game-high 4 RBIs.
Josh Keaton earned the victory for the Grizzlies in the final game of the twinbill. In six full innings, Keaton allowed four hits, four runs, and three earned runs. His biggest stat line of the day came in the form of a season-high 10 strikeouts and proved his durability with 124 net pitches.
The Grizzlies and Rangers close out the series tomorrow at 12 pm from the ASU Baseball Field.
