ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 13, 2016)— A nine-run fifth inning was more than enough for Adams State University to take Sunday's series finale versus Regis University, 17-10.
The Grizzlies (11-10, 7-1 RMAC) started Sunday's game against the Rangers on the wrong foot. After scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Grizzly lead was quickly erased after a strong trio of innings from RU.
The Regis batters reeled in one run in the third inning, five in the fourth, and three more in the fifth. The bad luck forced ASU Head Coach
Jim Capra to make a pitching change midway through the fourth frame.
Pitcher
Daniel Brown started the finale for Adams State and in three complete innings the junior allowed nine hits, six runs, and walked two batters. Pitcher
Dylan Sherry was inserted onto the mound after Brown but also struggled against the Rangers' hot bats.
It wasn't until
Bailey Garcia (2-1) entered the game in relief that the Grizzlies were able to stop the bleeding. Garcia had a solid outing against Regis, allowing only four hits and one earned run in 4.2 innings. Garcia's presence on the mound brought stability and injected momentum into the ball club.
In the bottom of the fifth the Grizzlies were trailing the Rangers 9-3, but a nine-run inning allowed the Grizzlies to snag the lead back.
Marco Garmendia started off the hit parade and sparked a Grizzly comeback with a single to third base in the leadoff spot. The next three Grizzly batters earned hits as well and when
Dillon Granzella singled to right field, he brought another two Grizzlies batters across home plate. The Grizzlies concluded the frame with 9 runs off 9 hits while sending 13 batters to the plate.
For the game, Zack Moldenhauer was ASU's best offensive performer. In five at-bats, Moldenhauer earned four hits, three runs, and earned four RBIs. The senior also sent a ball over the center field fence during the sixth.
Chris Morley and
Michael Downs both had solid performances as well, as the duo combined for seven total hits and two RBIs.
In their Sunday win, the Grizzlies snagged single-game highs with 17 runs, 21 hits, and a team batting average of .488. The win also cemented the Grizzlies first four-game sweep since the 2013 season. In the series, ASU totaled 50 runs, 65 hits, and five home runs. The Grizzlies last RMAC sweep occurred against Colorado Christian University on Mar. 23, 2013.
With Sunday's result the Grizzlies RMAC win streak swells to six games and places Adams State in a tie for first place in the RMAC Plains Division with Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Adams State now preps for a series with rival CSU-Pueblo next weekend. The four game series begins on March 18 from Pueblo.
