PUEBLO, Colo. (March 25, 2016) – Adams State University combined for 38 hits and 22 runs on Friday en route to a sweep against Colorado Christian University from Runyon Field.
The Grizzlies (14-15, 10-6 RMAC) cruised to an 11-4 victory in game one but had to fend off the Cougars in extra innings in the finale, 11-8.
A four-run fifth inning sparked the offense to an 11-4 victory in game one as the Grizzlies totaled 19 hits. In the big frame,
Dillon Granzella collected a RBI single with the bases juiced as
Zach Moldenhauer followed with a two RBI double down the right field line.
Dillon Bollig made it three consecutive scoring plays as his single to right field brought in Moldenhauer across home plate.
Adams State worked again with a bases loaded situation during the seventh with
Thomaslee Mares stepping into the batter's box. With a 1-0 count, Mares lifted a ball into right field to score Moldenhauer.
Derek Denovellis and
Michael Downs immediately followed with RBI singles to open the ASU lead to 8-4. Colorado Christian notched a run in the bottom of the frame but a pair of Grizzly runs in the eighth and another in the ninth kept the Cougars in the rearview mirror.
ASU's 19-hit feat was paced by
Tyler Thurston, Granzella, and Moldenhauer with three hits apiece as each position player in the lineup recorded a hit. The duo of Moldenhauer and Bollig were each responsible for two RBI.
Ryan Ferguson (1-2) came on in relief to begin the fifth and maintained the ASU lead with serviceable pitching. The junior lasted 4.0 innings on the mound with one run allowed off three hits. He forced eight ground outs and fanned two batters in his outing.
A 7-4 ASU lead in game two evaporated as the Cougars collected late runs to force extra innings. In a game scheduled for seven frames, the game went into the 10
th knotted at 7-7. Both offenses struggled to find the go-ahead run until the Grizzlies struck in their portion of the 10
th. After a leadoff single, runners advanced into scoring position thanks to a defensive error by the CCU first baseman. Now with runners on second and third, a Downs sacrifice fly to the outfield brought in
Adam Cox to score. Three batters later, Thurston singled up the middle to score
Evan Weidner for the eventual game-winning run. Granzella added a RBI single before the frame ended to give ASU a four-run edge. The Cougars added a run in the bottom of the frame via a solo home run but were unable to do any further damage to give Adams State an 11-8 victory.
It was a five-hit day for Weidner in the leadoff spot as Thurston nabbed four hits and four RBI. Bollig, Granzella, and
Nico Porreco also tallied a multi-hit game as the Grizzlies once again finished with 19 hits. The sizzling offense collected five doubles, a triple, and three stolen bases in the win.
Daniel Brown (2-0) recorded the win after coming in to pitch with one out in the bottom of the eighth. The junior product struck out three in 2.2 innings on the mound and gave up only one run off two hits.
