ALAMOSA, Colo. (March 6th, 2016) – Adams State University imposed their will against New Mexico Highland University's bullpen during a 12-6 win on Sunday. The victory secured a 3-1 series win for Adams State who remain at home next weekend with a four-game conference series against Regis University.
After NMHU (4-13, 1-3 RMAC) starting pitcher Phil Trujillo was pulled with a 6-4 lead after five innings, the Grizzlies (7-10, 3-1 RMAC) ate up the Cowboy reserves. In the bottom of the sixth, Adams State took the lead with a five-run frame and ultimately finished the game with eighth unanswered runs to pull away from the Cowboys.
The Grizzlies tore up the NMHU bullpen to the tune of eight runs off as many hits during ASU's final three innings at the plate. Unable to find a solution, NMHU utilized six pitchers during the series finale.
After being held in check earlier this weekend, the ASU offense came alive as
Thomaslee Mares and
Deven Nelson each provided a home run.
Marco Garmendia added a RBI triple in the seventh as Nelson,
Dillon Bollig, and
Michael Downs each connected for a double.
Five Grizzlies tallied a multi-hit game as a total of four ASU players notched two RBI apiece.
Zach Moldenhauer briefly gave ASU a 1-0 lead with a RBI single to score
Chris Morley in the bottom of the first. However, the Cowboys answered with a four-run third inning to gain control. Nelson's solo shot and a two RBI double from Downs in the fourth leveled the score at 4-4 but the Cowboys took a 6-4 lead with a run in the fifth and sixth.
Mason Munford (1-0) picked up the win after relieving starter
Daniel Brown in the top of the third. Munford forced seven ground outs in 3.1 innings of work and was aided by plenty of run support from the ASU offense during his outing.
