DENVER (May 1, 2016) –
Evan Weidner hit 3-for-5 and scored the game-winning run for Adams State University (19-24, 15-15 RMAC) as the Grizzlies defeated Regis University, 4-2, in 10 innings.
With one out in the tenth, Weidner reached base with a double and quickly made his way across home via two wild pitches from Regis reliever Adam Montano. A RBI single from
Deven Nelson later in the frame provided a much needed insurance run as reliever
Benjamin Nutsch took care of Regis in the bottom of the 10
th to secure the ASU win.
Both teams etched a run in the first and the score remained 1-1 until the fifth. Breaking up the tied affair was Regis' Connor Rochon who homered off ASU starter
Tanner Wiemers. It served as a minor blemish for Wiemers on the day who lasted 8 innings on the mound with two runs allowed off four hits.
The Grizzlies countered with a run in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2.
Michael Downs provided the equalizer with a RBI single to score
Marco Garmendia from third. Garmendia reached base with a Regis defensive error and made his way to third on a balk before Downs' RBI knock.
The Rangers threatened to end the game in the ninth as a leadoff hit ultimately resulted in pinch runner John Mullhern advancing to third base with two outs. Mullhern would not advance to home as Nutsch struck out Weston Byers to end the frame and force extra innings. The big out pushed momentum in favor of ASU for their two-run tenth. Nutsch (1-1) picked up the win after entering the game with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Weidner posted a game-high three hits and two runs scored and also provided ASU's only extra-base hit in the form of a double during the tenth. The duo of
Dillon Bollig and
Tyler Thurston each added two hits apiece during the win for Adams State.
The Grizzlies and Rangers return to the diamond for a Monday doubleheader beginning at 12pm.
