ALAMOSA, Colo. (August 18, 2016) – From the track to the octagon--that has been the athletic evolution of Dave Mazany over the past 15 years.

That latter of which has resulted in an Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) title belt for the Adams State University graduate after competing on the Grizzlies' track and field and cross country programs from 2002-06.

On July 15 in Carnival City, Johannesburg, South Africa, Mazany recorded a round one submission (guillotine choke) versus Leon Mynhardt to claim the EFC 51 Lightweight belt. The win improved Mazany's professional MMA record to 13-5-1.

"I am the only American on the roster so it has been awesome to represent myself, team, country, and now Adams State as I defend my title most likely in November or December," Mazany said of his association with EFC.

As a student-athlete for Adams State, Mazany competed in cross country and as a distance runner for the track and field program during his freshman and sophomore seasons. However, mild injuries brought forth a new direction for the Anchorage, Alaska, native during his last two collegiate seasons of eligibility.

"I was convinced by then ASU coach John Wallin to convert to the decathlon and heptathlon events. I did a little better but I was still a mid-pack athlete," Mazany added. "I felt I was valuable to the team as that guy who busted his butt and didn't quit. That attitude, along with the championship mentality and work ethic I picked up from ASU legendary cross country running and track and field programs, helped me to develop into an MMA fighter."

Mazany's MMA career began in his home state of Alaska but he soon relocated to Las Vegas to train at Xtreme Couture, founded by retired MMA fighter, Randy Couture.

"Every day I'm on the mat with the best in the world," Mazany said of training at Xtreme Couture.

The 2006 Adams State graduate earned a degree in HPPE with a minor in Coaching. Immediately following his degree, he worked for the Anchorage School District as a head coach for cross country, track & field, and ice hockey.
