ALAMOSA, Colo. (August 29, 2016) – Steve Valdez has been named this year's recipient of the
Ted & Janet Morrison Special Citation award. The award is given annually to recognize an individual who continues to make an impact on Adams State University athletics. Valdez will be publically recognized as this year's recipient at the upcoming Hall of Fame banquet on Friday, Sept. 23
rd.
"When it comes to supporting student-athletes, Steve has done it all. He regularly attends athletic events, served on boards and committees, been a corporate partner, hired student-athletes at City Market, and has even flipped burgers," said ASU Athletic Director
Larry Mortensen. "Steve is the epitome of being a true Grizzly fan and receiving the Hall of Fame citation award is overdue. Steve Valdez is what makes Adams State Athletics great!"
The 1987 Adams State graduate has been a member of the Grizzly Club Board of Directors since 2002 while serving as the Grizzly Club President from 2007-09. His involvement has helped qualified student-athletes with scholarships and contributing funds for capital improvements to athletic facilities and various athletic activities.
Valdez stated the capital construction of Rex Stadium, upgrades to facilities, and the addition of sport programs in recent years as his highlights of the Adams State athletic department.
"I don't think I have done anything different than anyone else in my position should do. It's all about ASU creating life time experiences for the student-athletes. It's exciting to see how athletics has brought the community together in the past and going forward in the future will continue to play an important role." Valdez said.
Valdez served on the Adams State University Governing Board of Trustees from 2007-13 and was named the
Billy Adams Award recipient in 2015.
Since 1985, Valdez has served as Store Manager for City Market Food & Pharmacy and was recently named the 2016
City Market Community Service award winner. In his role at City Market, he has also been the recipient of the
Moment of Truth Award and
Superior Service Golden Key Award.
The 2016 Hall of Fame banquet will take place on Friday, Sept. 23
