ALBUQURQUE (January 21, 2017) – Adams State University wrapped up their weekend competition on Saturday during the final day of the Cherry & Silver Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico.
For the ASU men,
Austin Anaya and
Sam Reid placed second in their respective events. In the mile, Anaya posted a provisional time of 4:14.03. His mark now serves as the third fastest time at the NCAA Division II level after an altitude conversion. Meanwhile, Reid had a provisional distance of 17.04m in the shot put.
In the mile, Anaya was joined by five other ASU student-athletes who finished in the top 10 of the event.
Richard Powell (4:16.76) took fifth as
Paddy Robb (4:19.28) took sixth.
Kristoffer Mugrage (4:20.43) placed seventh,
Sean Fontana (4:21) eighth, and
Grayson Freeman (4:23.00) took tenth to round out top ASU performers in the mile.
In the shot put, Reid was joined by teammates
Jonathan Millar (16.11m) and
Brecht Van Waes (15.91m) who placed sixth and seventh place, respectively.
With a provisional time of 1:51.72,
Tom Gifford finished third overall in the 800m final. After an altitude conversion, Gifford's time drops to 1:51.09 to give him the fastest NCAA DII time during the indoor circuit.
Micah Ballantyne advanced into the 60m dash final after posting a semifinal time of 6.89. In the final, Ballantyne took sixth with a time of 6.86.
Jenna Thurman placed second overall in the mile to highlight the ASU women on Saturday. Her time of 4:54.73 converts to 4:48.31 with an altitude conversion. The stellar time gives Thurman the fastest NCAA DII time for the event.
Roisin Flanagan (4:59.75),
Eilish Flanagan (5:04.45), and
Aden Alemu (5:09.54) placed fourth, eighth, and tenth overall in the mile. With their respective times,
Roisin Flanagan now ranks fifth nationally with
Eilish Flanagan ranked tenth and Alemu sitting in 17
th.
After advancing on Friday,
Sunayna Wahi moved into today's 60m dash semifinal. Wahi did not disappoint with a time of 7.60 to then advance into the final. Wahi ultimately finished fourth in the final with a time of 7.67. Amongst all NCAA DII student-athletes, Wahi ranks fourth in the event after posting a time of 7.55 (7.57 after altitude conversion) during Friday's preliminary round. She also ranks first nationally in the 200m dash with a mark of 24.16.
The duo of
Jessica Scherrer and
Cari Steen represented the Green & White in the 800m. Scherrer placed fifth overall with a time of 2:16.96 with Steen claiming seventh overall at 2:18.56.
Kiana Gomez was active on Saturday in the 60m hurdles semifinal but did not advance after posting a time of 9.28.
