ALAMOSA, Colo. (February 11, 2017) – Saturday resulted in a banner day for Adams State University as the Grizzlies combined for 20 provisional and four automatic qualifying marks split between the Husky Classic and the Adams State NCAA Qualifier.
Husky Classic (16 provisional and 4 automatic qualifying marks)
On the final day of the Husky Classic held at the Dempsey Indoor, the Grizzlies shined with several top marks.
Oliver Aitchison,
Sydney Gidabuday, and
Jenna Thurman each ran to NCAA Division II automatic qualifying times in their respective event.
The duo of Aitchison (4:01.32) and Gidabuday (4:01.76) competed in the mile finishing 11
th and 13
th, respectively. Aitchison now ranks first in the event at the NCAA DII level with Gidabuday right behind in second.
Thurman (4:42.14) also took first in her section of the mile and 14
th overall and set a new ASU indoor school record in the process. Thurman's feat bested Zoila Gomez's previous record of 4:43.94. Thurman's performance on Saturday gives her the third fastest NCAA DII time on the women's side.
ASU notched three provisional marks in the men's shot put as
Sam Reid (17.27m),
Brecht Van Waes (16.30m), and
Jonathan Millar (16.27m) placed 10
th, 19
th, and 20
th, respectively. Reid's 17.27m toss places him 10
th overall amongst all NCAA DII athletes.
Kale Adams (8:05.05) took 19
th and
Chandler Reid (8:13.73) 46
th during the 3000m as both posted provisional times. Adams' time now ranks third at the NCAA DII level.
In the mile, the duo of
Austin Anaya (4:07.54) and
Richard Powell (4:08.67) ran to provisional times as
Lucio Ramirez (14:39.50) and
Tom Gifford (1:53.05) did the same in the 5000m and 800m, respectively.
Four ASU women reached provisional status in the 5000m on Saturday. Accomplishing this feat were
Aden Alemu (17:01.62),
Malena Grover (17:02.00),
Kaylee Bogina (17:21.52), and
Sadie Baker (17:26.56).
Others to earn a provisional time were
Jessica Scherrer (56.69) in the 400m,
Leanne Allen (2:12.70) in the 800m, and
Roisin Flanagan (4:49.11) in the mile. Flanagan's mile time now places her seventh nationally.
Adams State NCAA Qualifier (4 provisional marks and 1 meet record)
Four NCAA Division II provisional marks and a new meet record were established at the High Altitude Training Center (HATC) on Saturday during the Adams State NCAA Qualifier.
In the men's 60m dash,
Micah Ballantyne reached provisional status with a winning mark of 6.77 as
Robert Guinn did the same with his provisional winning time of 1:56.31 in the men's 800m run.
Oweneika Watson also met the provisional standard in the women's 60m hurdles with a first-place finish of 8.74.
Kiana Gomez took second in the event at 9.12.
George Kelly not only set a provisional time in the men's mile but also established a new meet record by finishing in first-place with a time of 4:22.14. Kelly's feat bested teammate
Jackson Sayler's previous meet record of 4:23.47 set in 2015.
Paddy Robb (4:28.13),
Austin Speer (4:31.86), and
Grayson Freeman (4:32.53) placed third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively, in the mile.
On top of the aforementioned feats, six other Grizzlies placed first in their respective event.
Heather Shoats won the women's 60m dash in 7.91 as
Dianna Johnson did the same in the 200m dash at 25.54.
With a time of 50.30 Augie Larranaga won the men's 400m dash as
Joshua Joseph was the first to cross the finish line in the men's 3000m by posting a time of 9:00.57.
Sean Fontana took the crown in the 5000m at 15:43.23 but missed hitting a provisional mark by one-one hundredth of a second. With a distance of 5.40m
Miranda Vigil won the women's long jump.

A portion of Adams State student-athletes return to action on Sunday to compete at the UW Indoor Open in Seattle. Following that, the Grizzlies compete at the RMAC Championships on Feb. 24-25 in Spearfish, South Dakota.
