WLAX| Mountain Lions Spoil Adams' Season Opener 12-9

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo (February 25th, 2017) --- The Adams State women's lacrosse team opened up their season this afternoon on the road against UCCS. The Mountian Lions were able to squeak by with a 12-9 win over the Grizzlies.

Coaching her first game for Adams State, Angelica Gero had her team eager to open the season.

The Mountain Lions got on the board first with an unassisted score by Vanessa Nelson and Brianna Martinez off a Madison Ellis assist. With 13:11 remaining in the first half, the Grizzlies would score their first goal of the season off the stick of Hannah King, the first of her collegiate career. Vanessa Nelson and Grace Quinn would answer within 25 seconds of each other to put UCCS up 4-1. Unfazed by the deficit, the Grizzlies would add two more goals of their own. Savannah Penland and Hannah King notched in a pair to bring the game within one. Vanessa Nelson would continue to be a hassle for the defense as she added two more before the half ended. Cera Cyester and Hannah King would not let the Grizzlies down, as they reduced the deficit to 6-5 at halftime.

To open the second half, Vanessa Nelson would score her fourth, fifth, and sixth goals of the game to give the Mountain Lions an 8-5 lead. Cera Cyester would then score a second time in the game, but was quickly answered by Madison Ellis and Vanessa Nelson. Facing a four point deficit, the Grizzly freshman breakout, Hannah King scored unassisted for her fourth of the game. The two teams would trade scores for the remainder of the game, giving the Mountain Lions a 12-9 win.

UCCS managed a slight edge in shots 22-20, but Adams held an 18-17 advantage in shots on goal. The Grizzlies out did the Mountain Lions 12-10 in draw controls. Individually, the freshman, Hannah King had four goals and two ground balls for ASU. Cera Cyester added two goals and three ground balls also. The obvious star for UCCS was Vanessa Nelson with seven goals off of nine shots.

The team will be back in action on March 4th in Grand Junction to take on Colorado Mesa at 3:00pm.
