Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

WLAX| Comeback Falls One Point Short At Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. (March 25th, 2017) --- The Adams State women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker in Oklahoma today. Despite trailing by as much as four, the Grizzlies fought back but were held off by Oklahoma Baptist for a one point loss.

Adams State (0-6) would strike first on the afternoon. Savannah Penland scored an unassisted goal to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. The Bison (3-7) came roaring back with a 5-0 run to take a comfortable lead early in the second half. Refusing to stay down, Mireya Castro and Jessica Hammer would score within three minutes of each other to put ASU right back in contention. Oklahoma Baptist would counter with two unanswered goals of their own. With time running out, Adams State gave one last surge of offense. Jessica Hammer would score with 12 minutes left. Mireya Castro would then add another two to make it a one score game with four minutes left. Unfortunately, a defensive battle would ensue with neither team getting off another shot. The clock soon ran out and the Bison came away with the 7-6 victory.

Head coach Angelica Gero had this to say of today's game: "Although we didn't get the outcome that we intended, we worked really hard today. We capitalized on some great offensive opportunities that were kicked off by our defense. We're happy to be heading home after a week of great competition."

The freshman stud Mireya Castro put up yet another solid game. She recorded three goals on six shots, one caused turnover, and one draw control. Jessica Hammer also came up big with two goals on two shots, two ground balls, one caused turnover, and four draw controls. Alyse Mims stood tall in the goal, making 14 saves. As a team, the Grizzlies forced 14 turnovers and collected 20 ground balls.

At last, the six game road trip has ended and the team will now make their home debut. The Grizzlies will host Westminster on Friday, March 31st at 12:00PM
