WLAX| Nine Girls Score As Adams State Crushes Johnson & Wales 21-7

ALAMOSA, Colo. (April 6th, 2017) --- The Adams State women's lacrosse team is winless no more. The Grizzlies got an early lead on Johnson and Wales this afternoon and never looked back on their way to an easy 21-7 victory.

Despite the dominating win, it was Johnson and Wales (0-9) who would get on the board first only 14 seconds into the game. From there, Jessica Hammer and Hannah King would knock in their own goals to give Adams State (1-8) a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats would match the attack with two goals to take their last lead of the game. The Grizzlies put on a vicious offensive and defensive showcase over the following 11 minutes. Alexis Wellong, Cera Cyester, Jessica Hammer, Angela Gallegos, Sarah Cousins, Hannah King, and Savannah Penland all scored goals on an 8-0 ASU run. The Grizzlies would top off the rest of the first half with a 4-1 run to take a 14-4 halftime lead.

Trying to get back in the game, the Wildcats would score two unanswered goals to cut their deficit to eight. The teams then traded goals before Adams closed things out on a 6-0 run resulting in the program's first win since the 2015 season.

The 21 goals scored breaks the program's record for goals in a game that was previously set on March 16th, 2014 which was 19. The 14 point win is the largest margin of victory in program history. In all, nine different girls scored for Adams State on the afternoon. Angela Gallegos scored her first goals of the season, while Alexis Wellong and Milly Meza scored the first of their careers.

Hannah King had a stellar performance with six goals, six ground balls, and three draw controls. Her goal surge on the day now ties her with Cera Cyester for the most on the season (10). King's six goals establishes a new single-game season high. Angela Gallegos had a solid day as well with three goals, one assist, and three ground balls. Jessica Hammer and Cera Cyester also notched three goals each. Though she was not attacked a lot, Alyse Mims recorded seven saves in the goal. The Wildcats got nearly all of their offense from one girl, Kyra Gangemi, who had six goals and eight draw controls.

The Grizzlies pillaged the Wildcats defensively, forcing 16 turnovers and collecting 34 ground balls. The team also won the battle for draw controls 17-11, and shots 31-12.

Head coach Angelica Gero, had this to say of her team's win, "It was really nice to see all of the hard work my girls have put in over the past 11 weeks show off for everyone to see on the field today. We continue to learn from every game that we play. Today we learned what it feels like to win. This was a great start to a really big weekend."

The Grizzlies are right back at it tomorrow at Fort Lewis. The game will begin at 3:00PM.
