Grizzlies Head to Angelo State for Thanksgiving Tournament

ALAMOSA, Colo. - Adams State Men's Basketball is set to compete in its second straight tournament this weekend as the team heads to the Lone Star state for the Angelo State Thanksgiving Tournament. The Grizzlies will play in two games for the weekend before returning home for the start of December.

Tip-Off
The Grizzlies are coming off their first tournament of the season as they competed in the Al Kaly Shrine Classic last weekend hosted by CSU-Pueblo. The Grizzlies played in two games, with one being an exhibition game. They took on the Wayland Baptist Pioneers and MSU Texas in their two day stand. MSU Texas walked away with a slim 75-71 lead, while Wayland Baptist finished on top 84-80 in the exhibition game.

The Grizzlies battled hard in both games and will look to improve going into this weekend.  Senior guard John Dewey was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Shrine Classic after averaging 22 points per game over the two-game slate. The Grizzlies are 0-3 on their overall record but have played in six games so far, with three being exhibition matches.

Dewey's play this season has shown well for Adams State as he is tied for sixth in the RMAC in scoring with an average of 19.7 pointer per game. His 74 total points early on this season ranks eighth in the conference. He is also the team's leading rebounder at 7.3 boards per contest, which is tied for 13th in the RMAC. His 7.3 assists per game are the most in the RMAC, while his 2.0 steals per contest are tied for fifth.

Two other Grizzlies are averaging double figures in Davere Creighton and Rickey Norris. Creighton is the team's second leading scorer at 15.7 points per game, while Norris is third at 10.7 points. Not far from averaging double figures is Shemar Johnson who is at average of 9.7 points per contest. Creighton is the top percentage shooter for Adams State at 42.5%. He and and Norris are tied for second in rebounds at 5.0 per game, while Johnson is fourth at 4.3 boards per game. 

Scouting the Mustangs
Central Baptist enters the weekend with a 3-0 record on the year. The NAIA squad has played in four contests. They have one loss on the year but it was in an exhibition tune-up against Division II Ouachita Baptist. The three wins are against Eccelsia College, Crowley's Ridge College, and Hannibal-LaGrange. The Mustangs will play in more game on Wednesday, Nov. 21 against Wayland Baptist before heading to the Angelo State Tournament.

Five players are averaging double-digit points early on for the Mustangs with Percell Washington leading the way at 18.0 points per game. Victor Dukes is second on the team with an average of 15.3 points per contest. Kenny Barnes Jr. and Tyrone Alston are both in the 14-point range at 14.5 and 14.0 points per game, respectively. Ruston Hayward rounds out the scoring with an even 10.0 points per game.

Washington is also the team's top rebounder at 9.0 boards per contest. Dukes is second at 8.0 rebounds a game, while Barnes Jr. is third at 7.0. As a team, the Mustangs shoot the ball well at 51.4% per game. Defensively, they hold teams to 37.9% shooting and an average of 67.7 points per game.

Scouting the Rams
Angelo State enters the weekend with a 3-1 overall record as the team is set to host its second tournament in as many weeks. The Rams hosted the Ed Messbarger Classic last weekend where they went 1-1 in two games played. They defeated Jarvis Christian College 98-62 but fell to St. Edward's 65-58 in the second game. They also have wins against University of the Southwest (N.M.) and UCCS.

Two players are putting an average of 10 or more points per game for Angelo State in Ronald Bell and Josh Boutte. Bell leads the charge averaging 18.3 points per game, while Boutte is second at 15.0 points per contest. Bell's average is one of the best in the Lone Star Conference at second. Boutte is the team's top shooter percentage wise at 63.4%, which is also tops in the LSC. Bell is second on the team and fourth in the LSC at 50.9%.

Bell and Boutte are also the team leaders in rebounds at 8.3 and 7.8 per game, respectively. Both rank in the top-five in the LSC. James Kirksey is the top assist getter for the Rams at 4.0 assists per game. As a team, Angelo State is averaging 81.3 points per game while holding the opposition to 67.3 points per game. They shoot 42.7% from the floor while opponents are just in front of that at 43.2% per game.
