Box Score 4 SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Adams State softball team came away with two wins in five games this weekend in Angelo, Texas. The Grizzlies went 1-1 against both Florida Tech University and Texas A&M International University while also losing a matchup with No.2-ranked Angelo State.
February 9, 2018: On Friday morning, the Grizzlies opened up the Angelo State University George & OLA McCorkle Challenge with a matchup with Florida Tech. Adams State struck first in the fourth inning as
Skylar Higens singled down the left field line scoring
Jasmine Parker. The Grizzlies would continue to keep the pressure on as
Taya McWilliams doubled in a run in the fourth inning.
Kaytlynn Johnson would add on to the lead with a two-run double of her own in the sixth inning.
Whitney Fields kept the Panthers off the board only allowing eight hits while walking two batters in a complete game shutout. Seven Grizzlies wound up with a hit as
Shelby Haskins ended up with three hits.
The second game of the day did not go as well as the first as the Grizzlies fell to Florida Tech, 8-0. The Grizzlies could only muster five hits through five innings. Madison Vrabel wound up getting the loss as she went 3.2 innings, allowing five runs, five hits, and six walks.
The Grizzlies last game of the day came against Texas A&M International. The Grizzlies came away with the victory, 4-1. The Dustdevils scored first with an early run in the bottom of the first inning. The Grizzlies would quickly strike back in the third inning as
Tyler Hays tripled to centerfield putting the Grizzlies on the board.
Hannah Wirtjes would drive in another run in the fourth with a groundout to second base scoring
Alexis Martinez. Wirtjes drove in another run on a first basemen miscue scoring
Kenzie Lange in the sixth inning.
Sarah Hansen added to the Grizzlies lead with an RBI single of her own to put the Grizzlies ahead by three.
Whitney Fields had her second complete game of the day on the mound. The senior only allowed one run on seven hits through her seven innings of work.
Tyler Hays and
Taya McWilliams lead the offensive attack with two hits apiece.
February 10, 2018: The Grizzlies struggled during the second day of the tournament losing to Texas A&M International and Angelo State. The Grizzlies got off to a hot start when
April Riggins tripled to centerfield in the second inning scoring three runs. The Dustdevils then went on to score eighteen runs combined in the middle innings of the game. The Dustdevils came away with the victory, 23-12.
Shelby Haskins and
Kaytlynn Johnson were a combined 4-7 withj three runs scored and three driven in.
The Grizzlies wrapped up the tournament with a loss to No.2-ranked Angelo State, 10-2. Angelo State got off to a fast start with eight runs in the first two innings.
Stephanie Huff would eventually get the Grizzlies on the board with a two-run double in the third inning. However, Angelo State would tack on two more in the later innings eventually winning the ball game, 10-2.
The Grizzlies start conference play this week against Regis University. The Grizzlies will play a double-header on Saturday and Sunday in Denver.
