BROOKFIELD, Ill. - The Don Hansen All-Super Region Four Teams were announced Tuesday afternoon and Adams State Football had a players earn All-Region accolades in wide receivers
Chad Hovasse and
Marquese Surrell.
Hovasse was named to the region's First Team Offense as a receiver while Surrell was named to the Second Team Offense as an All-Purpose player. The duo are no strangers to the Don Hansen Team as they were both named All-Region and All-American in 2017.
For the 2018 season, Hovasse and Surrell were two of the best at their positions not only in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference but in all of Division II. Combined, the two dynamic seniors racked up 2,431 receiving yards, 27 total touchdowns, and 190 receptions. Their play helped Adams State maintain one of the highest scoring offenses in Division II during the 2018 season.
2018 was a season to remember for Hovasse as he broke more single season and career records. He was one of Division II's best receivers as he ranked in the top-five in a number of receiving categories. He set a single season record in receptions with 104. His 104 receptions is not only the most in a single season for Adams State but it is the first time a player has pulled in 100 receptions. His 44 touchdowns, 268 receptions, and 3,964 receiving yards are all the most in a career for the Grizzlies. He led all of Division II during the regular season in receiving yards (1,356) and receptions per game (9.5) while ranking in the top five in touchdowns (19, 2nd) and receiving yards per game (123.3, 2nd). He was named a Second Team AFCA and AP All-American. Hovasse also earned First Team All-RMAC honors for the second straight season but he was also named the Conference's Offensive Player of the Year. His player of the year honor was the first for Adams State since the 2004 season Adam McGurk was named RMAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. Hovasse was also named to the D2CCA All-Super Region Four Second Team and was one of 37 finalists for the Harlon Hill Trophy as Division II's Top Football Player. This Hovasse's second Don Hansen All-Super Region Four honor.
Surrell was a playmaker for the Grizzlies not only on offense but on special teams. He put together back-to-back 1,00 yards receiving seasons as he totaled 1,075 for 2018. What makes this mark more impressive is that he did it while playing one less game than last season and wore a specialized cast for much of the season on his left hand. The Oakland, Calif. native was second on the team in yards, receptions and touchdowns behind Hovasse. He pulled in 86 receptions to go along with eight touchdowns and set the Adams State single game record in receptions (18) against Angelo State on Oct. 27. Surrell was third in Division II in receptions per game (8.6) during the regular season and was also a threat on special teams for Adams State. He was eighth in Division II in all-purpose yards per game at 174.1 and totaled 1,741 in 10 games of play. Both of his marks were top-three in the RMAC. He was third in all of Division II in receptions per game with 8.6 per game. Surrell's play garnered him his second All-RMAC selection with both coming as a second team pick. This Surrell's second Don Hansen All-Super Region Four honor.
The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2018 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be selected.
