DURANGO, Colo. – The Adams State Grizzlies Mens' Basketball team prepares for their final bout of the 2019 portion of the season, as they travel to Fort Lewis to take on their RMAC rivals, the Fort Lewis Skyhawks. The Grizzlies are now 3-7 on the year coming off of last weekend's trip in South Dakota, and they will face off against an 8-2 Fort Lewis squad who tore through their nonconference schedule, but have been hot and cold since entering RMAC play.
The Grizzlies were on the wrong end of a back and forth game in their last contest against South Dakota Mines last Saturday, and they will now try and rebound with a win against another team with a good record, as they did after falling to CSU-Pueblo, only to come right back with a thrilling victory against previously undefeated New Mexico Highlands. Oddly enough, the opposite was the case for the Skyhawks when they welcomed Highlands and CSU-Pueblo to their home court, as they were blown out by the Cowboys on December 6
th, just to rebound with a big victory of their own, defeating the Thunderwolves by three the following night. This makes this game tough to gauge, knowing the teams have flip flopped wins and losses against common opponents.
Coming on strong for the Grizzlies as of late has been graduate-senior point guard
Juwan Green. In an offense that has heavily featured the point guard as a main facilitator in recent years with Brandon Sly and John Dewey, Green appears as though he has taken the reigns in the offense and has asserted himself as a leader on the court. Even in the two losses last weekend, Green was the highlight of the box score, putting up 20 or more in both games, as he now has an active 20-point streak of three games and counting.
The Grizzlies, still missing their big men, have not been all that outmatched on the boards despite having a size disadvantage to most teams. In their last win against New Mexico Highlands, they were able to get tough, timely buckets as well as great hustle play from their backcourt on both ends, and what was perhaps the main factor in the close win was that they won the turnover differential and played a very clean second half. If they can find a formula and stick to it, they can start rolling.
The Grizzlies will take on the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on the road in what hopes to be their second RMAC victory of the season, as they currently sit at 1-3. They hope to end 2019 on a high note and bring momentum into 2020. Game time is set for 7:30 PM from Durango, Colo.
