NEW ORLEANS - For the second time this year Adams State sprinter
Kandace Thomas has been named the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) National Division II Athlete of the Week as announced Tuesday morning.
Thomas was superb across the boards for the Grizzlies as she broke a pair of RMAC Championship meet records, tied a Division II all-time record, and posted the sixth-best mark all-time in Division II in one event. The senior's dominance was key in help the Adams State Women's Track & Field team secure its 24th overall RMAC Indoor Title.
The 60m dash was the highlight of the Canton, Ohio native's dominance at the conference meet. On Friday in prelims, Thomas ran a 7.30 flat in the 60 to set a new RMAC Championship meet record. 24 hours later she once again broke the record running a blazing 7.18 to win the event. Her time also tied the Division II all-time record for the 60.
Thomas also set a new RMAC Championship meet record in 200m dash. In the prelims she ran 23.63 to once again etch her name in the RMAC record books. Her time easily qualified her for finals but she elected not to run.Â
The final event that Thomas made sure she was the best in was the long jump. In just her third time competing in the event this indoor season, Thomas took over the Division II lead and posted the sixth-best mark ever in Division II history. She claimed the conference crown with a jump of 20-9.
Thomas is the current Division II leader in all three events. The full list of accepted entries for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships will be announced later this afternoon.
