Grizzlies compete at last chance, prepare for Nationals

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Following the conclusion of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on April 27, the Adams State Grizzlies competed at four last-chance meets in pursuit of national qualifying marks.

The postseason began at the CSU Pueblo Last Chance Meet on May 3, where the Grizzlies delivered several standout performances. Alese Sartain and Isila Apkup went 1-2 in the women's 400 meters, while Clara Keddy and Fiona Hawkins also swept the top two spots in the 1,500 meters. Victoria Amiadamen ran a significant personal best in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking 59.15 to win the event and move up to eighth nationally.

Haley Harkrider raced well in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Lauren Ocampo finished second in the women's javelin. On the men's side, Ryan Gordon placed third in the 100-meter dash, while the Grizzlies swept the podium in the 200 meters with Keirryse Simpson, Ja Waren Smith and Chris Rader finishing first, second and third, respectively.

In the 400 meters, Caleb Bafukila and Ryan Chacon finished third and fourth, and Carmelo Corral took fifth in the 800 meters. Andy Setser and David Millian posted strong efforts in the 5,000 meters and 3,000-meter steeplechase, respectively, and the men's 4x400-meter relay team placed second.

In the field events, Sam Dirkes and James Waddles went 1-2 in the men's shot put. Dirkes posted a mark of 18.06 meters, which currently ranks 11th in Division II.

From May 8-10, a select group of five Grizzlies traveled west to compete at the APU Franson Last Chance Meet. Ava O'Connor highlighted the meet with a third-place finish in the women's 5,000 meters, running 15:49.65 to move to No. 3 nationally. Elena Carey and Megan Garrett competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Carey improved her national qualifying time.

On the men's side, Oisin Lynch improved his 800-meter national time, while Max Aldrich competed in the 5,000 meters.

On May 9, Adams State sent a small group to Colorado Springs for the AF Twilight Meet. Clara Keddy and Marie Garrett raced in the women's 1,500 meters, while Gavin Heyneman, Ryan Gordon and Keirryse Simpson ran in the men's 200 meters. Chris Rader competed in the 400 meters, and David Millian placed fifth in the 1,500 meters. In the field, James Waddles competed in both the shot put and discus, while Sam Dirkes threw in the discus.

Micah Swann capped off the week of competition on May 11 at the WT Last Chance Meet, racing in the 1,500 meters.

With the regular season now complete, the Grizzlies turn their attention to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, set for May 22–24 in Pueblo, Colorado. Eight Adams State men will compete in four events, while 14 Adams State women will compete in seven events.
