INDIANAPOLIS — The Adams State Grizzlies finished Day 1 of the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships with two All-Americans and five finals qualifications.
The day began for the Grizzlies with the women's mile run. Three Grizzlies earned spots in Saturday's final. Elena Carey and Maggie McCleskey qualified after running times of 4:42.52 and 4:43.96, respectively, in the first heat. Ava O'Connor won the second heat with a time of 4:46.14 to secure her place in the final. Katie Hughes finished 17th with a time of 5:02.56.
On the men's side, Housem Hrabi secured an automatic bid after finishing in the top three of his heat with a time of 4:05.06. Freshman Harrison Boyd also advanced to Saturday's final, claiming the ninth and final qualifying spot with a time of 4:05.77.
El-Mir Reale competed in the preliminary heats of the 400-meter dash, finishing 17th in 50.43 seconds after being tripped up during the second lap. He managed to finish the race but did not qualify for the finals.
The women's 5,000-meter race was one of only three finals on the day. Tristan Spence and Emily Schoellkopf earned All-American honors after finishing second and eighth, respectively. Spence, a sophomore from Grand Junction, crossed the line in 16:10.60. Schoellkopf, a senior from Albuquerque, New Mexico, finished in 16:26.74 to land on the podium.
The men's 5,000-meter race remains under review, with results expected to be finalized Friday.
The Grizzlies will be back in action Saturday, beginning with the women's 800-meter at 12:30 p.m.
