Grizzlies Split Home Opening Series in Two Days of Doubleheaders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ALAMOSA, Colo. – Adams State Softball defended their home turf in their home opening series against Oklahoma Panhandle State University. The Grizzlies split the series 2-2 with two days of doubleheaders. On Saturday, Feb. 15, the Grizzlies fell to the Aggies in both games of their doubleheader, 11-10 and 11-1. Adams State came out to play in Sunday's doubleheader, winning 8-7 game one and 3-0 in game two.
 
Feb. 15 – Game One
The Grizzlies started game one strong with hot bats in the bottom of the firstt inning. Grizzly bats were on fire with the offense producing two triples and a couple solid base hits to earn themselves an early 4 run lead.  
 
Oklahoma Panhandle State responded in the top of the second, scoring three runs. The Aggies defense kept the Grizzlies bats silent in the bottom of the second and kept their heat streak into the top of the third. The Aggie offense scored three runs in the top of the third to take the 4-6 lead over the Grizzlies.  
 
Oklahoma Panhandle State stretched their lead by two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Adams State answered in the bottom half of the inning. Rebecca Wood was the hero of the inning, smashing a 2-run homer to get the inning started. Later in the inning, Jasmine Parker hit a 2 RBI single to score Kyrah Archibald and Samantha McDonald to tie the score at 8.
 
It wasn't until the top of the seventh that the tie was broken. The Aggies scored three runs to take the 8-11 lead. The Grizzlies didn't go down without a fight. Adams State battled in the bottom of the seventh to get on base. Adams State fought to get on base, and had some great at bats, battling through 10 plus pitches. The Grizzlies managed to bring in two runs to close the gap, but the Aggies defense finished off the inning strong. Adams State fell 10-11 in game one of their opening doubleheader.
 
Leading the Grizzly bats were Jasmine Parker and Hannah Wirtjes each going 2-3. Parker and Woods each led the Grizzlies with 2 RBIs a piece. Jade Garbiso was is the circle for the Grizzlies, completing 6.1 innings, facing 31 at bats with 2 strikeouts. Kelty Key closed the game for Adams State, facing 3 batters in her .2 inning.
 
Feb. 15 – Game Two
Oklahoma Panhandle State kicked off game two with an early start. In the top of the first, a fielder's choice allowed the Aggies to score, giving them an early 0-1 lead. The Grizzlies countered in the bottom half of the inning by scoring a run of their own. Breck Smith came up to the plate with two runners on and hit a double to deep left to score one.
 
The Grizzlies followed the inning with a couple of spectacular defensive plays, to keep the score tied at one. In the top of the second inning, the Grizzlies starting pitcher Taylor Sandoval, had two big strikeouts. In the top of the third, the Aggies had a runner on third charging the plate. First basemen Shelby Haskins threw the ball home to catcher Kylea Wall, who tagged the runner from third, preventing Oklahoma Panhandle State from taking the lead.  
 
Despite some solid defensive plays, the Grizzlies couldn't keep the Aggies bats at bay forever. In the fourth, Oklahoma Panhandle State scored 6 runs to extend their lead. With a scoreless fifth, the Aggies stretched their lead to 10 at the top of the sixth, scoring four more runs. The Aggies defense kept the Grizzlies offense quiet, preventing them from scoring and handed the Grizzlies a tough 1-11 loss in the second game. 
 
Sabdoval was on the rubber for the Grizzlies in game two, completing 5.1 innings, while facing 29 batters. Madison Dailey closed the game for the Grizzlies, striking out the final two outs. The Grizzlies were able to generate four hits throughout the game, being led by Tyler Hays and Samantha McDonald.
 
Feb. 16 – Game One
Adams State came out strong in day twos round of games. The third game of the series opened with an exciting first inning. With two aboard, the Aggies hit a single to center, to score one run and advance the other runner to third. The Aggies got their second run scoring on a passed ball. Adams State bounced back in the bottom half of the inning. Samantha McDonald opened the inning up hitting a ball down the line to score an inside the park homerun. Parker followed with a single to center. Analiese Rodriguez took it to right center for a two-run homerun to give the Grizzlies the lead, 3-2.
 
Oklahoma Panhandle State opened the top of the second with a double down the left field line. The Aggie advanced to third and then scored from two consecutive wild pitches. With two outs the Aggies hit four singles to score three more runs, ending the top half of the inning leading the Grizzlies 3-6.
 
With three scoreless innings, Adams State woke their bats up in the bottom of the fifth. Parker led the inning off with a single to left. Tyler Hays followed up with a two-run bomb to right center. Smith and Rodriguez each joined in with singles to left. Maya Ramos-Moreno hit an RBI single to short to score Smith. Sydney Muniz brought home the Grizzlies fourth run of the inning on a SAC fly to right field. The Grizzlies regained their lead, 7-6.
 
Both the Aggies and Grizzlies earned one more run each in the top of the sixth. With two outs and two runners on, Oklahoma Panhandle State hit into an RBI fielder's choice, to score one. Adams State responded with a lead off single to through the middle by McDonald. Advancing on a wild pitch and stolen base, Parker joined her on the bags from a walk. Hays hit into a fielder's choice, advancing Parker to third, and scoring McDonald. Adams State closed a scoreless top of the seventh, earning their first win of the season, 8-7.
 
Adams State bounced back from yesterday's losses with a big win, gained 8 runs on 12 hits. Parker led the Grizzlies in game one, going 3-3 scoring two runs. Rodriguez and Moreno each went 2-3 on the game, with Hays leading the Grizzlies with 3 RBIs. Jade Garbiso earned her first win of the season, completing 5.1 innings, facing 23 batters, and earning 4 strikeouts.
 
Feb. 16 – Game 2
The Grizzlies played a solid second game, only allowing 3 hits and zero runs. With one, two, three first and top of second innings, Adams State earned their first run in the bottom of the second. Smith led the inning off with a single to right, followed by a Rodriguez single to right center. Muniz came through with an RBI single to left to score Smith and put the Grizzlies on the board.
 
The Grizzlies tacked on two more runs in bottom of the fourth. Alyssa Castaneda pinch ran for Rodriguez after she was walked. Shelby Haskins doubled to right center, advancing Castaneda to third. Bailey Reid got an RBI ground out to short to score one. Muniz singled to right to score Haskins for the Grizzlies third run.
 
The Grizzlies won their second game 3-0 with 5 hits. Adams State was led by Sydney Muniz going 2-2 in the game with 2 RBIs.  Madison Dailey got the win in the circle, completing 6 innings, facing 22 batters and striking out two. Taylor Sandoval earned her first save of the year setting down the final three batters of the game.
 
The Grizzlies head into RMAC play next weekend, Feb. 22 and 23 to take on Regis University in Denver, Colo.
